This is a full-time position as Staff Custodian at Sunnyside Intermediate School. Those already working in the LSC, in a position represented by the Local 2601, should complete an INTERNAL application through the LSC website and submit the attached bid form to Mr. Chuck Bear, Director of Facilities no later than 4:30 pm on Tuesday, February 3, 2026. Interested applicants, from outside of the district, should complete an EXTERNAL application through the employment link of the LSC website by Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
Pay: $16.82 per hour, 40 hours per week

Staff Custodian
REPORTS TO:
Building Principal, Director of Facilities
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Staff Custodian performs routine cleaning, sanitation, and general maintenance services to ensure that school buildings and grounds are safe, clean, orderly, and welcoming for students, staff, and visitors. The Custodian maintains equipment in functional condition and provides custodial support for daily operations and special events. Work is performed under the general supervision of the building and district administration.
This position requires compliance with all district safety procedures and applicable federal and state regulations, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards, chemical hygiene protocols, and district safety training requirements.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Open, inspect, and secure buildings at the beginning and end of shifts to ensure safety and cleanliness.
- Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, stairways, and other building areas according to district standards.
- Sweep, mop, buff, strip, and wax floors.
- Clean carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, blinds, windows, doors, walls, ceilings, and woodwork.
- Remove graffiti and clean glass surfaces.
- Replace light bulbs and report facility maintenance concerns.
- Set up and break down tables, chairs, and equipment for meetings and school events.
- Empty trash and recycling containers and dispose of waste properly.
- Receive, unload, and deliver supplies and materials throughout the building.
- Perform groundskeeping tasks, including debris removal and basic exterior upkeep.
- Remove snow and ice from entrances and walkways and apply ice-melt materials as needed.
- Perform deep cleaning and minor repair work during school breaks and summer periods.
- Assist staff, families, and visitors during special events and programs.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisors.
EQUIPMENT:
- Hand tools and powered custodial equipment, including but not limited to: brooms, mops, floor scrubbers and waxers, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, lawn equipment, ladders, and basic hand tools.
- Follow all district safety rules and OSHA workplace safety standards.
- Properly use personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, masks, and eye protection as required.
- Comply with the district's chemical hygiene program and Safety Data Sheet (SDS/MSDS) procedures.
- Report unsafe conditions or equipment malfunctions promptly.
Occasional travel between schools, or between schools and central office, may be required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work orders.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English sufficiently to perform job duties safely and effectively.
- Ability to communicate respectfully and maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, and visitors.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations related to measurements and supplies.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to work from ladders or lifts at elevated heights.
- Ability to meet physical requirements of the position.
- Regular standing, walking, bending, lifting, and reaching.
- Ability to lift up to 100 pounds with assistance.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, waste materials, and outdoor weather conditions.

- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Prior custodial, maintenance, or cleaning experience preferred but not required.
- Ability to provide reliable transportation for occasional travel between district buildings.
- Indiana Motor Vehicle Operator's license or ability to provide own transportation.
