JOB SUMMARY

This position performs technical duties for the department’s pressure control management functions. This position is on call 24/7.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Installs, repairs, and maintenance of the city’s pressure control systems.
  • Assists with maintaining internal program compliance.
  • Preforms daily work assignments in the pressure control area.
  • Performs technical maintenance tasks.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs system malfunctions.
  • Performs administrative field duties.
  • Assists with managing system pressure control records.
  • Assists with ensuring compliance with Department of Transportation regulations.
  • Conducts odorization tests.
  • Locates and repairs gas leaks.
  • Identifies corrective and preventative actions to maintain adequate pressure control of the city’s gas distribution system.
  • Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  • Knowledge of the installation, maintenance, and repair of natural gas distribution systems
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices related to the handling of natural gas emergencies.
  • Knowledge of regulators.
  • Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, city codes, and department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skills in the operation of special equipment, including a backhoe, jackhammer, air compressor, tractor, and fusion machines.
  • Skills in problem solving.
  • Skills in prioritizing and planning.
  • Skills in interpersonal relations.
  • Skills in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
  • The Gas Assistant Director – Operations work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
  • Guidelines include the State of Georgia Code Title 46, the Code of Federal Regulations, the Natural Gas Fuel Code, city and county ordinances, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
  • The work consists of varied technical and administrative duties. Diagnosing failures in complicated systems contributes to the complexity of the work.
  • The purpose of this position is to preform technical duties in the departments’ natural gas pressure control functions. Successful performance helps ensure the safe, effective and efficient operation of the natural gas utility system.
CONTACTS
  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, engineers, contractors, vendors, developers, state inspectors, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and to provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in an office, stockroom, warehouse, or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school education.
  • Three to five years’ experience or service.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
