Position: Treatment Plant Operator I (SANDY CREEK EMPLOYEES ONLY)

Performs entry-level work. Work involves maintaining and operating the City’s wastewater treatment plant system in a safe, effective, and efficient manner, using technical expertise, practices and servicing required for plant equipment, lift stations, laboratory techniques and safety procedures. Works under close supervision with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement. Operator must be able to be scheduled for “on-call” rotation.

Required Qualifications Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work schedule is Monday – Thursday, 6:30 am to 4:00 pm and Friday, 6:30 am to 10:30 am. Work schedule is subject to change.
  • Conducts routine tests and instrument readings at regular intervals and records data.
  • Calibrates and monitors plant equipment daily and records data.
  • Cleans and maintains filters, blowers, pumps and other mechanical equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains other related plant facilities and grounds.
  • Collects samples for analysis and record data.
  • Assist with Inspection, troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing equipment and systems and coordinates work with engineers, contractors, and other crafts.
  • Assist with Evaluating the operation, maintenance and repair of the plant, makes changes in flows and processes, and/or reports potential or actual problems with recommended solutions and other appropriate actions.
  • Performs calculations and prepares written reports.
  • Subject to after-hours call out for emergency situations including on call rotation and special events.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education And Experience
  • High school graduate or its equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year work experience in wastewater treatment operations or equivalent combination of work experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Required Certificates And Licenses
  • Valid Driver’s License. (Approximately 10% driving time in a company vehicle.)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Valid Texas Class B CDL or the ability to obtain within 6 months of the hire date.
  • TCEQ "D" wastewater treatment license at the time of hire or 9 months after hire date.
  • Basic first aid certificate or the ability to obtain one within 9 months of the hire date.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to operate construction equipment such as backhoe, chainsaw, shovel, two-way radio, cell phone, computer, measuring devices, meters (pH, Dissolved O2, Chlorine).
  • Skill in wastewater treatment operations, regulatory requirements and effective management.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate licenses and certificates.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Skill in operating assigned equipment, tools, and vehicles safely.
  • Ability to work hours other than the regular daytime schedule such as shift work, on call, or emergency response situations.
  • Skill and ability to analyze and prioritize multiple tasks using effective reasoning in a timely manner, analyze situations and adopt quick, effective reasonable courses of action.
  • Ability to write reports and perform complex mathematical calculations.
  • Must be able to wear city provided uniform and city issued personal protective equipment - steel-toed leather boots, steel-toed rubber boots, gloves, eye protection, head protection, safety vest, and ear protection.
  • Workers must follow safety procedures and usage of safety equipment.
  • Skill in operating assigned equipment, tools, and vehicles safely.
  • Ability to report safety hazards, equipment problems and emergency situations.
Physical Demands & Additional Information

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and push, pull, drag up to 150 pounds.
