Title: Boiler Operator - On Call
Position
Purpose:
Operates and maintains steam generating boilers and associated equipment for the central heating plant and other campus locations. Monitors and adjusts chemical water treatment equipment to maintain steam and return condensate quality.
Schedule:
Schedule requires flexibility, ability and willingness to cover vacations during the week, work weekends, evenings, and other non-traditional schedules. Shift hours could be: 5:15 a.m. – 1:30 pm; 1:15 pm – 9:30 pm; 9:15 pm – 5:30 am. Shift hours may change (10-12 hours) based on business needs.
Job Duties:
- Operates, maintains, and repairs high and low pressure boilers and associated equipment.
- Maintains operation logs on boilers, water quality levels, and other related plant equipment as required.
- Assists Lead Operator in maintaining a safe and clutter free boiler plant.
- Performs all boiler related functions in accordance with Federal, State, and Local Codes.
- Performs tasks in accordance with Federal, State, and College safety policies and procedures.
- Shovels snow seasonally as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- State of Maine High Pressure Boiler Operator license.
- 4th or 3rd class Stationary Engineers License desired.
Experience
- 3-5 years of experience in commercial boiler operation.
- 8+ years of commercial boiler operation desired.
Skills and Knowledge

- Knowledge of steam and electrical distribution systems.
- Knowledge and basic understanding of continuous opacity monitoring systems.
- Must have thorough understanding of combustion control systems.
- Basic math and computer skills.
- Proper cleaning, maintenance, and inspection of boiler water and fireside area.
- Ability to logically trouble‑shoot equipment problems.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions in performing job duties.
- Ability to perform manual tasks requiring moderate physical strength.
- Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of interpersonal situations and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
- Ability and willingness to work weekends, evenings, on‑call and other non‑traditional schedules.
