Job Summary

Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school site or facility to maintain buildings, locker rooms, and adjacent grounds in a clean, orderly, and secure condition.

Essential Job Functions
  • Sweep, scrub, mop, wax, polish floors and vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, workshops, and other assigned work areas; spot clean and shampoo carpets; glue and stretch carpets as assigned.
  • Clean classrooms, restrooms, showers, locker rooms, shops, cafeteria, offices, gymnasium floors; remove spills, gum, and debris; monitor gym events and protect the building.
  • Clean and disinfect drinking fountains, sinks, toilets, showers, urinals, mirrors, tiles, and windows.
  • Report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards; recommend maintenance repairs; maintain security of buildings and report suspicious persons.
  • Wash windows and walls; clean chalkboards, trays, erasers, and empty pencil sharpeners; assemble furniture and supplies for special events.
  • Clean venetian blinds, dust, polish furniture, woodwork; make minor non-technical repairs.
  • Lock and unlock doors and gates; manage alarm system per schedule.
  • Order supplies per established guidelines.
  • Pick up and rake paper, trash, and debris around school grounds and buildings; sweep walkways and entrances; discharge trash correctly.
  • Pack, unpack, load, receive, and store books, supplies, and materials.
  • Operate cleaning equipment such as vacuums, floor strippers, buffers, polishers, carpet shampooers, scrubbers, high-pressure sprayers, sweepers, and blowers.
  • Shovel, plow, and sand walkways as directed.
  • Respond to emergency cleanups, maintain records of maintenance and safety issues.
  • Participate in major summer cleaning projects.
  • Communicate in more than one language or willingness to learn at a novice level.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and maintain regular attendance.
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Basic methods, materials, tools, and equipment for custodial work and routine maintenance.
  • Proper storage of equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Proper lifting techniques.
  • Use cleaning materials, equipment, and methods according to predetermined standards.
  • Learn schedules, procedures, and equipment use.
  • Apply safety precautions and procedures.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in clean working order and secure them.
  • Perform minor non-technical repairs and report maintenance needs.
  • Perform heavy physical labor and meet schedules.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Communicate effectively with others, orally and in writing.
  • Inspect and assure security of facilities during shifts.
  • Walk, bend, lift, push, and stand for extended periods.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate.
Physical Demands
  • Activity around moving machinery; exposure to changes in temperature, humidity, dust, fumes, and gases.
  • Lift, carry, push or pull medium weights up to 75 pounds.
  • Bend, squat, crawl, climb, and reach.
  • Use hands for simple grasping and fine manipulation.
  • Communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing.
  • Work while standing, sitting, and/or walking.
Salary and Benefits

Pay: $17.00 to $25.53 per hour.
