Head Custodian I
BASIC FUNCTION:
The Head Custodian I/II is responsible for planning, assigning, scheduling, directing and participating in the cleaning, custodial and routine maintenance functions for assigned school classrooms, building and other facilities.
The Head Custodian I/II works closely with support staff to direct, coordinate and supervise the work of subordinate custodians in a lead capacity.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
Positions within the I or II, level are based upon the size or type of facility to which assigned and/or the number of subordinates supervised.
Head Custodian I:
Is assigned to a small school or facility, such as an elementary school. Supervises one to three subordinates in a lead capacity.
Head Custodian II:
Is assigned to a medium sized school, such as a large elementary school or middle school. Supervises 1 to 4 subordinates in a lead capacity.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Plans, assigns, directs and participates in cleaning, custodial and routine maintenance functions for assigned school site classrooms, buildings and other facilities
Acts as lead person for assigned custodial/ maintenance personnel/crews
Inspects completed work for accuracy and compliance to instructions and established custodial/maintenance standards
Performs minor maintenance, repairs and adjustments to building fixtures and equipment; paints buildings and performs other restoration work as assigned
Operates and adjusts thermostats for furnaces, heaters, air conditioning, lighting systems and timers as required
Inspects assigned school facilities and grounds for sanitary and safety hazards and reports hazards to appropriate authority
Requisition s cleaning supplies and materials for assigned facilities/plant; monitoring expenditures to ensure compliance with established budget
Cleans walls, furniture, windows, woodwork and other equipment
Sweeps walks, hallways and driveways; picks up paper and rubbish
Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes and shampoos linoleum tile, carpets and wood floors
Directs and assists in the set up and arrangement of furniture and facilities for assemblies, lunch, athletic events and special meetings/events
Confers with school site administrator and Custodial Maintenance Supervisor regarding custodial and maintenance projects and activities at assigned site
Directs and participates in minor groundskeeping duties; waters plants, trees and lawns; pulls weeds
Ensures security of assigned school facility; locks and unlocks doors, enters security code, inspects burglar/smoke alarms for proper functioning, arranges for lock repairs
Prepares routine custodial reports as required
Directs and participates in the routine maintenance of custodial tools and equipment
Initiates work orders for major maintenance needs
Acts as information source to subordinate custodians regarding work methods, procedures, problems, etc.
Raise and take down flags
Performs related duties as required
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
Modern cleaning methods, materials, tools and equipment
District policies and procedures related to custodial operations
Safety rules and regulations associated with custodial work
Care and maintenance of custodial and building equipment and tools
Security practices and policies of the District
Ability to:
Communicate effectively in oral and written forms
Direct, coordinate and prioritize the work of others
Perform minor maintenance and repair work on building equipment
Understand and follow both oral and written instructions in an independent manner
Safely operate and apply custodial equipment, materials and chemicals
Operate heating and ventilation equipment
Work safely and effectively on ladders and scaffolding
Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties
Perform heavy physical labor including but not limited to the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties
Maintain the confidentiality and security of sensitive information
Use technology, machines and/or tools appropriate to the position
QUALIFICATIONS:
Valid California Driver's License
High School Graduate or equivalent
Experience and/or specialized training desirable
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
12 month position
