Position: (1.0) Class III Utility and Grounds Position

Job Description

The Class III Utility Grounds position will perform skilled and semi‑skilled tasks in the maintenance and care of district grounds, exterior structures and related facilities, as well as district and departmental equipment. The employee will maintain lawns, trees, landscaping, athletic fields, parking lots, sidewalks and outdoor systems to ensure a clean, safe and attractive environment for students, staff and the community.

The Utility Grounds position will also assist with building maintenance tasks, snow removal and seasonal operations, as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor and/or their designee.

District Overview

Livonia Public Schools employs approximately 1,900 staff members, serving approximately 13,300 students pre‑K through post‑secondary. There are 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, 1 career technical center, 1 early childhood center, and 1 vocational and transition center in the school district. The annual budget for Livonia Public Schools is $175 million, with a state funding of $9,608 per pupil.

Qualifications
  • Have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to obtain a Class B CDL or CDL Permit.
  • Have a background in operating and maintaining agricultural type tractors, 2‑wheel drive, and all‑wheel drive with gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Have a background operating and maintaining light construction equipment, air compressors, jack hammers, and compactors, etc. Experience preferred.
  • Have a background in operating and maintaining turf equipment, zero‑turn grass cutting machines up to 16 ft., reseeders, topsoil applicators, aerators, etc.
  • Have a background in operating and maintaining snow removal equipment, dump trucks, pickup trucks, scissor lifts, power brooms, salt spreaders, etc.
  • Be physically able to move and lift heavy equipment.
  • Have no fear of working in high places.
  • Must be self‑motivated and willing to work with others.
  • Must be able to interact with computers, i.e., work order program.
Conditions of Employment

Specific details involved in the position will be discussed with the administrator during the interview and at the time of hiring for the position. Regular working hours are 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, and 12 months per year. All maintenance personnel are subject to be on‑call 24 hours a day, any day of the week, and must work the necessary hours required.

An outstanding attendance record is a must.

Because of the nature of this work, a spirit of cooperation with all others including members of the public and school community is essential.

Salary and benefits will be in accordance with the terms and conditions of the Agreement between the Livonia Public Schools School District and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL‑CIO Local 118, Council 25.
