Position: MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT III  (NON-CAREER)

Maintenance Assistant III (Non-Career)

The Port of Long Beach is seeking three (3) Maintenance Assistant III (Non-Career) employees to join the Custodial Team. These positions support the maintenance and cleanliness of Port-owned facilities by performing a variety of routine and semi-skilled custodial and maintenance duties. Responsibilities include cleaning and maintaining offices, restrooms, break rooms, and other Port facilities; performing floor care such as stripping, waxing, buffing, and carpet cleaning;

restocking custodial supplies; assisting with facility moves and special projects; and helping maintain safe, clean, and functional work environments throughout the Port.

The selected candidate may work up to 29 hours/week. Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours in a year for a maximum of two (2) years. The assignment may end at any time, but under no circumstances will it extend beyond two years. Non-Career employees are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals, subject to applicable federal and state provisions.

Examples

Of Duties
  • Perform routine custodial and maintenance duties, including cleaning offices, restrooms, break rooms, common areas, and other Port-owned facilities.
  • Empty trash and recycling receptacles; sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and maintain assigned work areas.
  • Perform semi-skilled floor care, including stripping, waxing, buffing, polishing, and shampooing carpets.
  • Restock custodial supplies and equipment at designated locations throughout the Port.
  • Assist with moving furniture, equipment, and other materials as needed for operational or special event support.
  • Operate and safely use common custodial equipment, hand tools, power tools, and cleaning equipment.
  • Maintain safe, clean, and organized work areas while following established safety procedures and departmental standards.
  • Work independently to complete assigned custodial and facility maintenance tasks with limited supervision.
  • Support emergency response, facility maintenance activities, and other operational needs as assigned.
  • Perform special projects and other related maintenance duties as assigned.
Requirements To File

Education, Knowledge &

Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Knowledge of a variety of common maintenance and repair tools, materials and techniques.
  • Previous experience cleaning and maintaining carpets is preferred.
  • Previous experience in stripping and waxing tile floors is preferred.

Technical Skills Needed:

  • Experience using basic hand tools and power tools is required.
  • Must have a valid California Driver's License to perform work-related duties such as driving to other work sites and attending required meetings.
  • Must be capable of working independently without extensive direction or oversight.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • May lift and move medium to heavy objects.

Special Note This is an "at-will" position. The selected candidate will serve at the discretion of the Port of Long Beach and can be terminated at any time. In such an event, the candidate has no right to any appeal or grievance procedure under any rule or regulation of the City of Long Beach.
