The City of Gunnison is seeking a dependable and motivated Zamboni Driver to join our Parks and Recreation team at the Ice Rink. This is a hands on position for someone who enjoys working with equipment, maintaining facilities, and taking pride in creating a safe, high quality experience for the community. You will operate the Zamboni and other specialized equipment, maintain smooth and consistent ice surfaces, monitor rink conditions, perform routine equipment and facility maintenance, and help prepare the rink for hockey games, figure skating, public skating, tournaments, and special events.

The ideal candidate has experience operating powered equipment and performing facility, building, or grounds maintenance, along with a strong commitment to safety and customer service. You should be comfortable working in cold environments, using hand and power tools, performing physically demanding work, and working early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as rink activities require. A high school diploma or GED and a valid Colorado driver's license are required.

Hourly rate ranges from $21.98 to $24.79 per hour depending on qualifications and experience, plus a $1.84 per hour incentive completion bonus at the end of the season.
General PurposePerforms skilled work in the operation of ice resurfacing equipment and the maintenance of indoor and outdoor ice facilities to provide safe, high-quality skating surfaces for public recreation, organized sports, and special events. Responsibilities include resurfacing ice, monitoring and maintaining ice quality, performing routine maintenance on rink equipment and refrigeration systems, assisting with facility operations, and supporting event setup and other Parks and Recreation functions as assigned.
This position helps ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of City ice facilities while providing excellent customer service to facility users.
- Operates the ice resurfacer (Zamboni) to maintain safe, consistent, and high-quality skating surfaces for public skating, hockey, figure skating, special events, and tournaments.
- Monitors ice conditions and adjusts resurfacing techniques based on ice quality, weather, usage, and event schedules.
- Performs daily ice maintenance, including edging, shaving, flooding, patching, painting lines and logos as needed, and repairing damaged areas.
- Assists with the installation, removal, and seasonal maintenance of indoor and outdoor ice surfaces.
- Operates and maintains ice edgers, snow blowers, utility vehicles, snow plows, and other maintenance equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Performs routine inspections and preventative maintenance on the ice resurfacer, refrigeration equipment, dasher boards, glass, benches, nets, doors, and other rink infrastructure.
- Monitors and records ice plant operating conditions, including temperatures, pressures, water quality, and equipment performance, and reports abnormalities to supervisory staff.
- Cleans and maintains the rink facility, including locker rooms, spectator areas, mechanical rooms, storage areas, walkways, and other public spaces.
- Assists with snow removal and ice control around facility entrances, sidewalks, parking areas, and emergency exits.
- Sets up and tears down equipment for recreational programs, hockey games, figure skating events, tournaments, rentals, and community events.
- Completes daily maintenance logs, equipment inspections, work orders, and operational records accurately and timely.
- Identifies maintenance and safety concerns and reports issues requiring repair or corrective action.
- Provides courteous, professional customer service to patrons, user groups, contractors, and coworkers.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- One (1) year of experience operating equipment, maintaining facilities, or performing building or grounds maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience operating powered equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
- Basic knowledge of mechanical systems and the ability to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and a flexible schedule based on facility operations and special events.
- Valid Colorado Driver's License (or ability to obtain within a specified period) with an acceptable driving record.
