What You Will Do
The Chemistry Division's Actinide Analytical Chemistry Group (C-AAC) is seeking chemical laboratory technicians. Our capabilities serve the Laboratory's core national security mission areas of weapons science and threat reduction. We are seeking applicants who are committed to LANL's safety and security standards, can perform high quality work, provide excellent customer service and possess good documentation and communication skills.
Successful applicants will routinely work to neutralize and absorb nuclear material while working with technicians, technologists and scientists in a production-oriented environment focused on characterization of actinide residues.
This position will be filled at either the Research Technician 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Research Technician 1Salary: $49,600‑$76,700
- Conduct technical work in the associated facilities, as directly over watched by a supervisor.
- Work with nuclear material in glove boxes and hoods with direct supervision.
- Perform waste management support in CMR and RLUOB with direct supervision.
- Be detail oriented in record keeping.
- Perform duties with direct supervision.
- Perform work and follow procedures in accordance with all applicable safety and security practices in a nuclear facility.
- Work is directly related to national security objectives and requires the individual to protect and maintain sensitive or classified information.
Salary: $54,900‑$84,300
- In addition to the duties outlined above, the Research Technician 2 will be required to perform routine tasks with limited supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with initiative and complete assignments with minimum direction.
Minimum
Job Requirements:
- Willingness and ability to work in a chemistry laboratory setting with corrosive and hazardous chemicals.
- Willingness and ability to work with nuclear material.
- Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Basic computer skills including use of Microsoft Office products.
- Experience demonstrating good communication skills.
- Experience working in a team environment.
- Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.
- Ability to work shift schedule (shift work).
- Experience working with hazardous materials.
- Experience working in a highly regulated work environment.
- Experience using various personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirator work.
Research Technician 1:
High School diploma or equivalent.
Research Technician 2:
High School diploma and a minimum of 3 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
DOE Order 426.2A requires a High School Diploma.

Work Schedule:
This position may require extended hours which could involve working a shift schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
Work Location:
The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment:
Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
