Position: General Mechanic - Day Shift - Full Time - Raceland - St Anne

Job Overview

This role responds to assigned departmental maintenance needs and is responsible for the execution of repairs or replacements of affected equipment in assigned area(s). The incumbent responds to and repairs specialty systems, accelerates requests as appropriate to leaders for distribution, and refers requests beyond scope to Facilities leaders.

Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting of electro/mechanical systems using specialized test equipment and hand/power tools.

Education

Required: High School diploma or equivalent

Preferred: Trade school or company school

Work Experience

Required: 2 years of experience in Commercial, Industrial or Hospital Maintenance or completion of the Ochsner Apprenticeship program

Preferred: Healthcare experience

Certifications

Valid driver’s license in the state of residence

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Experience with all hand and power tools
  • Familiar with a wide range of skilled crafts including plumbing, electrical, HVAC‑R, and carpentry
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a can‑do attitude
  • Mechanically inclined ability to multi‑task and work with minimal supervision
  • Working knowledge of state, parish, and building codes, and JCAHO standards
  • Self‑directed with ability to handle mental and physical stress/pressure, including emergencies
  • Able to work indoors, outdoors, and in restricted spaces for extended periods
  • Basic knowledge of reading, writing and understanding mechanical and electrical symbol isms to interpret blueprints, schematics, specifications, and mechanical drawings
  • Proficient in handling power and hand tools required to perform job duties effectively
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills with effective judgment
  • Willingness to work on‑call for emergencies and extended hours
Job Duties
  • Perform general inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs of minor electrical, mechanical, and plumbing items within the hospital or clinic setting (e.g., unclogging plumbing lines, replacing light bulbs, replacing ceiling tile, repairing leaking faucets, painting touch‑up)
  • Follow up on completed assignments ensuring equipment functions properly
  • Respond to and repair specialty systems such as nurse call, fire alarm, television, medical gas, and ceiling systems
  • Complete preventive maintenance inspections per scheduled checkpoints and maintain documentation
  • Assist with maintenance on associated equipment within assigned area(s)
  • Perform other related duties as required
  • Assist other departments with daily maintenance and support services, and upkeep of facilities structures and building systems
  • Remain onsite during severe weather emergencies or disasters, assigned to a work area throughout the event
Physical and Environmental Demands

Heavy Work – Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demands may exceed those for sedentary work. In addition, routine may involve walking or standing for a significant degree; pushing or pulling arm or leg controls; or operating at a production rate pace that requires constant pushing or pulling of materials.

The job may entail exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissue; occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases; and passage through isolation rooms.
