Internship Opportunity
The Plaquemines Parish School District is seeking a motivated and dependable student intern to assist with routine maintenance tasks within district schools and facilities. The Student Intern | Facilities will support the maintenance team in ensuring the upkeep, cleanliness and safety of district buildings, while gaining hands-on experience in facility management and repair services.
The internship requires a total work time of 112 hours and pays $10.00 per hour.
Qualifications (minimum education, licensure, skills and/or experience)Required
- Currently enrolled in a Plaquemines Parish School Board high school with the class designation of junior or senior.
- Strong work ethic, reliability and attention to detail.
- Ability to lift and move equipment and materials (up to fifty [50] lbs.).
- Ability to follow instructions and work safely.
- Basic knowledge of the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
- Willingness to learn and contribute to tasks as assigned.
Preferred
- Previous experience in maintenance, construction or working with tools.
- Basic understanding of building systems (plumbing, electrical, heating, ventilation and air conditioning [HVAC]).
- Basic knowledge of maintenance tools and equipment.
- Assists with the general upkeep of school facilities (e.g., classrooms, office spaces, hallways).
- Performs minor repairs to plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems under supervision.
- Assists with grounds maintenance, including lawn care and debris removal.
- Helps with the setup and breakdown of school events and activities.
- Aids with inventory management of maintenance supplies and tools.
- Follows safety protocols and helps maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Assists with painting, fixing fixtures and replacing light bulbs.
- Participates in larger facility projects as needed.
- Supports the team in emergency maintenance tasks.
- Handles and stores chemicals properly to prevent accidents, spills and leaks and ensure chemicals are stored in designated, safe areas with appropriate containers and labeling.
- Wears appropriate PPE, such as gloves, eye protection and respirators, as directed.
- Reports any unsafe conditions or incidents to supervisors or appropriate personnel.
- Gains hands-on experience in basic maintenance tasks, such as cleaning, repairs and facility upkeep.
- Determines how to properly use and maintain maintenance tools and equipment.
- Understands safety protocols in the maintenance and facility management environment.
- Develops skills in identifying and addressing minor plumbing, electrical and HVAC issues.
- Improves teamwork and communication skills by working closely with maintenance staff.
- Learns how to organize and manage maintenance supplies and inventory.
- Grasps the importance of facility maintenance in ensuring a safe and efficient school environment.
- Obtains experience in emergency response procedures related to building maintenance.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
This role primarily operates in an indoor, climate-controlled environment, with occasional exposure to moderate temperature variations. The usual methods of performing job functions require light lifting (up to fifty [50] pounds), carrying, pushing and pulling, with frequent engagement in activities such as standing, walking and sitting. Additional physical requirements include extended use of a computer for data analysis, report generation, communication and administrative duties;
alternating between sitting and standing for meetings, presentations and other administrative activities; ability to drive within or outside of the district to various schools, meetings and events; and occasional travel outside the district for conferences, site visits or professional development.
