Internship Opportunity

The Plaquemines Parish School District is seeking a responsible and dedicated student intern to assist with the maintenance and repair of school buses and other district vehicles. The Student Intern | Transportation Mechanic will gain practical experience in vehicle diagnostics, repairs and preventative maintenance while working under the supervision of the transportation team.

The internship requires a total work time of 112 hours and pays $10.00 per hour.

Qualifications (Minimum Education, Licensure, Skills and/or Experience)

Required:

  • Currently enrolled in a Plaquemines Parish School Board high school with the class designation of junior or senior.
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to lift heavy items and work with mechanical tools and equipment (up to fifty [50] pounds).
  • Strong attention to detail, safety consciousness and ability to follow instructions.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Willingness to learn and improve mechanical skills in a hands-on environment.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience or coursework related to automotive repair or mechanics.
  • Familiarity with vehicle systems such as engines, electrical and hydraulics.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists with routine maintenance and repair of school buses.
  • Performs basic vehicle diagnostics, including checking fluid levels, tire pressure and other essential systems.
  • Helps with troubleshooting mechanical issues under supervision.
  • Aids in replacing parts, such as brake pads, filters and other vehicle components.
  • Participates in preventative maintenance tasks, such as oil changes and system inspections.
  • Cleans and organizes the maintenance workshop and tools.
  • Assists with maintaining accurate records of vehicle maintenance and repairs.
  • Follows safety procedures and ensures the proper handling of tools and equipment.
  • Supports the transportation team in vehicle readiness for daily school operations.
Learning Objectives
  • Gains hands-on experience in maintaining and repairing school buses and district vehicles.
  • Learns to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues in vehicles, including basic systems (engine, brakes, electrical, etc.).
  • Develops skills in performing routine vehicle maintenance such as oil changes, tire rotations and fluid checks.
  • Understands safety protocols and best practices for working in an automotive repair environment.
  • Discovers how to organize and maintain accurate records for vehicle repairs and maintenance.
  • Improves problem-solving and critical thinking skills related to automotive repair.
Work Environment and

Physical Requirements

This role primarily operates in an indoor, climate-controlled environment, with occasional exposure to moderate temperature variations. The usual methods of performing job functions require lifting (up to fifty [50] pounds), carrying, pushing and pulling, with frequent engagement in activities such as standing, walking and sitting. Additional physical requirements include extended use of a computer for data analysis, report generation, communication and administrative duties;

alternating between sitting and standing for meetings, presentations and other administrative activities; ability to drive within or outside of the district to various schools, meetings and events; and occasional travel outside the district for conferences, site visits or professional development.
