ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The standard custodial work shift hours are as follows:
- 1st shift: 6:30 a.m.–3 p.m.
- 2nd shift: 3 p.m.–1:30 a.m. (10‑hour shift, 4 days a week, includes additional pay differential)
- 3rd shift: 10:30 p.m.–7 a.m. (includes additional pay differential)
Reports to work at required times and performs duties assigned by Custodial Supervisor including:
- Daily cleaning and sanitizing of bathroom facilities: floors, toilets, walls, partitions, sinks, mirrors, showers, windows, glass doors
- Daily cleaning of interior facility spaces: offices, halls, classrooms, labs, food service areas, common areas
- General outdoor services and maintenance: sweeping entry areas, cleaning mirrors, windows, and glass doors as needed
- Collects and disposes of trash and recyclable materials from all facilities
- Provides custodial services for scheduled and unscheduled events (may include irregular shifts such as nights, days, weekdays, weekend, holidays)
- Attends to emergency needs as required
- Safety and compliance: wears, uses, and maintains proper personal protective equipment; tracks safety data sheets, work orders, and facility forms; observes safety rules and regulations; identifies and reports safety issues, posting warning signs as needed
- Inventory management: stocks supplies in custodial closet for assigned building; identifies and reports equipment, supplies, and repairs needed
- Security: locks/unlocks classrooms as assigned; secures campus buildings daily (doors and windows)
- Floor care: completes assigned work orders (stripping, waxing, carpet cleaning)
- Special events: assists with campus graduations and other functions; monitors lobbies and restrooms during events
Education:
High school diploma or GED.
Experience:
1–3 years of related experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Clean and professional appearance
- Cordial, detailed‑oriented, self‑motivated, diligent, trustworthy, possess strong organizational skills and well‑developed communication skills
- Must be able to lift more than 50 pounds and perform duties of the custodial trade in typical Virginia climate and indoor/outdoor settings
- Experience with residential and/or commercial/industrial cleaning (methods and safety) preferred
- Working knowledge of safe and efficient operation of electrically and propane‑powered and manual cleaning equipment
- Willingness to be trained and follow directions
- Ability to carry out written instructions and implement tasks; ability to bend, crouch, kneel, stand, and walk for long periods of time
- Effective communication in verbal and written English
- Ability to understand and follow instructions, and work under limited supervision
- Maintain clean and organized work areas
- Flexibility regarding work assignments, routinely changing
- Logical thinking and problem‑solving with minimal guidance
- Basic knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
- Professional representation of the university in public and community settings
- Strong organizational skills
- Intuitive reasoning and analysis of information and events; apply judgment to solve problems of both routine and complex nature
- Occasional travel to local and off‑campus locations
- Walk, stand on feet for 8‑hour periods; perform all essential custodial functions for an entire workday
- Bend, crouch, kneel, work on hands and knees as necessary; walk up and down stairs
- Lifting up to 50+ pounds; perform repetitive motions such as sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, wiping, scrubbing
- Operate cleaning and floor machines safely and properly
- Work with arms lifted overhead; work in dusty conditions
- Vision adequate to see dust, debris, moisture on floors and other surfaces
- Work without allergies or sensitivities to cleaning agents, odors, and products used by the facility department
- Clean, sanitize areas when sewage backs up or bodily fluid present
- Work efficiently and competently individually or as part of a team
