Overview
Custodians are responsible for maintaining multisensory excellence standards for all Liberty University facilities, on and off campus, by cleaning and sanitizing interior spaces. They provide a clean, orderly, and aesthetically pleasing environment and support the University’s mission by ensuring a safe and sanitary setting.
Responsibilities- Work 10‑hour shifts (6:30am–3pm, 3pm–1:30am, 10:30pm–7am) with a 4‑day week and pay differential for all shifts.
- Perform daily cleaning and sanitizing of all bathroom facilities, including floors, toilets, walls, partitions, sinks, mirrors, showers, windows, and glass doors.
- Clean all interior facility spaces such as offices, halls, classrooms, labs, food service areas, and common areas.
- Conduct general outdoor services and maintenance: sweeping entry areas, cleaning mirrors, windows, and glass doors.
- Collect trash and recyclable materials from all facilities for removal and disposal.
- Provide custodial services before, during, and after athletic and other scheduled or unscheduled events, including irregular shifts that may include nights, weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
- Attend to emergency needs such as spills, bodily fluids, or sanitary emergencies in accordance with OSHA standards for exposure control to blood‑borne pathogens.
- Wear, use, and maintain proper personal protective equipment.
- Keep track of safety data sheets, work orders, and facility forms; observe safety rules & regulations; identify and report safety issues.
- Stock supplies in custodial closets and lock/unlock classrooms as assigned; lock doors and windows daily to secure campus buildings.
- Complete floor care work orders such as stripping, waxing, and carpet cleaning.
- Train, instruct, and supervise other custodians on proper work methods, safety, and equipment use.
- Review, inspect, and report the work of assigned staff; assist with employee time records and reporting absences; provide input to employee evaluations.
- Lead and direct crew activities while performing custodial duties.
- Schedule time off to ensure coverage during personal time off.
- Assist with setup and execution of campus graduations and other large events.
- Respond to urgent and situation‑specific custodial needs; monitor lobbies and restrooms during events.
- Maintain awareness of health and safety regulations; comply with LU and OSHA rules.
- Perform occasional seasonal tasks such as shoveling snow from sidewalks.
- Keep abreast of industry technologies, processes, products, and performance benchmarks.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 1–3 years of related custodial experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must be able to work well with the public and co‑workers, and present a positive, courteous, and professional appearance.
- Strong organizational and communication skills; self‑motivated, diligent, trustworthy, and detail‑oriented.
- Must be able to lift 50+ pounds and perform custodial tasks in an indoor/outdoor setting in typical Virginia climate.
- Experience with residential, commercial, or industrial cleaning methods and safety preferred.
- Knowledge of safe and efficient operation of electrically, propane‑powered, and manual cleaning equipment.
- Effective verbal and written communication in English.
- Ability to work under limited supervision and complete written instructions.
- Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing work assignments.
- Logical thinking and problem‑solving abilities.
- Basic knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Must be able to bend, crouch, kneel, stand, and walk for extended periods.
- Must be able to operate cleaning equipment, lift up to 50+ pounds, and perform repetitive motions.
- Must be able to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency hours.
- Must have reliable communication skills using radio and telephone.
Work is performed in climate‑controlled indoor settings, with moderate noise levels. Exterior duties may involve dusty, unsanitary, or hazardous conditions, including exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and slippery floors. Situational tasks may include heavy lifting, operating floor machines, and working in various physical positions.
Driver RequirementsPersonal vehicle (or LU vehicle) use is required for travel. A valid Virginia driver’s license, a clean DMV record, and liability insurance are required.
Location & Time TypeFull‑time onsite position at Liberty University.
