Position: Summer Temp | Custodian I

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining and caring for all LU facilities, on and off campus. The responsibilities include cleaning, sanitizing, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, trash collection, removal, & disposal. The Custodian maintains an esthetically pleasing, clean, sanitary, and safe environment in a variety of spaces including lobbies, hallways, dorms, bathrooms, showers, locker rooms, classrooms, offices, food service areas, and other public event areas.

Any other duties as assigned. Working independently and exercising good judgment and discretion is essential to this job.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Available in the event of school closings, delays, shutdowns, and any emergencies including clean-up required because of severe weather incidents. Performs snow removal activities as assigned, such as snow and ice removal from entrance ways and sidewalks.
  • Report to work at the required time and perform duties as assigned by the Custodial Supervisor.
  • Work with 2-3 employees.
  • Perform daily cleaning and sanitizing of all bathroom facilities, including toilets, sinks, and showers. Use brooms, mop, buckets, vacuum cleaners, and other related cleaning equipment.
  • Clean mirrors, windows, and glass doors as needed.
  • Provide custodial services before, during, and after athletic and other special events.
  • General outdoor services and maintenance such as sweeping entry areas and cleaning glass doors at entrances.
  • Collect trash and recyclable materials from all facilities, for collection, removal, and disposal.
  • Support and assist with established recycling efforts.
  • Support urgent and situation‑specific custodial needs. Attend to unsafe conditions such as mopping up spills and responding to calls for clean-up of body fluids in accordance with the OSHA standard for exposure control to blood borne pathogens.
  • Attend and complete required safety training per university requirements.
  • Responsible for wearing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while performing the job duties and responsibilities of a Custodian and while operating related equipment including protective eye wear, ear protection, hard hat, gloves, steel‑toed shoe, respirators/ masks, reflective safety vests, and sunscreen.
  • Report any unsafe conditions or incidents of suspicious activity or persons, as well as any maintenance repair issues to the appropriate area Supervisor.
  • Provide punctual and reliable services before, during, and after events as scheduled, including irregular shifts that may include nights, days, weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
  • Monitor lobbies, and service restrooms during events; ensuring the highest level of cleanliness, patron satisfaction and event success.
  • Use proper supplies to perform daily tasks and report when additional supplies are needed.
  • Operate and maintain powered and manual equipment.
  • Safely and properly use cleaning agents. Maintain awareness and knowledge of all health and safety regulations and procedures pertaining to Custodial operations; follow LU and OSHA health and safety rules, procedures and standards.
  • Undertake occasional seasonal tasks such as shoveling snow from sidewalk.
  • Move materials and equipment and perform related duties to assist in Custodial cleaning events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Remain abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services and leading industry performance benchmarks.

  • Qualifications and Credentials
    • Education:

      High school diploma or GED.
    • Well‑developed communications skills.
    • Experience with residential and/or commercial/industrial cleaning (methods and safety) field is preferred.
    • Working knowledge of safe and efficient operation of electrically powered and manual cleaning equipment.
    • Detail‑oriented, strong organizational skills and well‑developed communication skills.
    Abilities and Competencies
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
    • Ability to understand, speak, and write English in a professional manner.
    • Ability to understand and follow instructions, and work under limited supervision.
