Position: Summer Temp | Custodian I

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining and caring for all LU facilities, on and off campus. Duties include cleaning, sanitizing, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, trash collection, removal, and disposal. Tasks also involve wiping, dusting, and cleaning furniture to keep the environment esthetically pleasing, clean, sanitary, and safe. Areas of responsibility include lobbies, hallways, dorms, bathrooms, showers, locker rooms, classrooms, offices, food service areas, and other public event areas.

Additional duties are assigned as necessary. The custodian works independently, exercising good judgment and discretion.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Available for school closings, delays, shutdowns, and emergencies, including clean-up following severe weather incidents.
  • Perform snow removal activities as assigned (snow and ice removal from entrance ways and sidewalks).
  • Assist during campus events such as Winter Fest, Orientation, Convocation, CFAW, and summer camps, both scheduled and unscheduled hours.
  • Report to the required time and perform duties assigned by the Custodial Supervisor.
  • Work alongside 2‑3 employees.
  • Perform daily cleaning and sanitizing of all bathroom facilities, including toilets, sinks, and showers.
  • Clean mirrors, windows, and glass doors as needed.
  • Provide custodial services before, during, and after athletic and other special events.
  • Conduct general outdoor services and maintenance such as sweeping entry areas and cleaning glass doors at entrances.
  • Collect trash and recyclable materials from all facilities.
  • Support and assist with established recycling efforts.
  • Respond to urgent and situation‑specific custodial needs, including mopping spills and cleaning body fluids per OSHA standards.
  • Attend required safety training per university requirements.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing duties.
  • Report unsafe conditions, suspicious activity, or maintenance repair issues to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Provide punctual and reliable services before, during, and after events as scheduled, including irregular shifts (nights, days, weekdays, weekends, holidays).
  • Monitor lobbies and service restrooms during events to ensure cleanliness and patron satisfaction.
  • Use proper supplies for daily tasks and report when additional supplies are needed.
  • Operate and maintain powered and manual equipment.
  • Use cleaning agents safely and maintain awareness of all health and safety regulations.
  • Undertake seasonal tasks such as shoveling snow from sidewalks.
  • Move materials and equipment to assist in custodial cleaning events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Stay informed on emerging technologies, processes, products, services, and industry benchmarks.
  • Work effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission.
QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED. Preferred experience with residential and/or commercial/industrial cleaning methods and safety. Knowledge of safe and efficient operation of electrically powered and manual cleaning equipment. Detail oriented, strong organizational skills, and well‑developed communication skills.
