Job Title
The Lynchburg Department of Public Works is seeking experienced custodians to perform routine semi-skilled and heavy manual work in the care and cleaning of City buildings.
Working hours for this position are 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
This is a full-time position with competitive benefits, including VRS retirement, paid time off, and medical, dental, and vision benefits ($26/month employee-only cost).

Essential DutiesEssential duties and responsibilities include the following:
- Utilizes appropriate interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with a diverse customer base some of which may occasionally display emotions such as confusion, frustration, or anger;
- Performs the following custodial cleaning functions in various buildings:
- Performs basic sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping of floors, plus advanced stripping, waxing, and buffing of floors.
- Cleaning carpets with extractor.
- Spot cleaning carpet and upholstered furniture.
- Operate a wet/dry vacuum.
- Cleaning and disinfecting urinals, toilets, and lavatories.
- Refilling soap, towel, and toilet tissue dispensers.
- Wash windows, walls, woodwork, and bathroom fixtures using ladders.
- Gathers and disposes of trash from interior and exterior of assigned buildings; gathers paper for recycling.
- Dusts office furniture, partitions, high and low ledges and moldings, and venetian blinds.
- Assist with cleaning of parking decks.
- Reports repairs beyond capabilities of custodial workers to supervisor or crew leader;
- May perform routine security to include locking and unlocking doors and deactivating alarm system of assigned building, and reports unusual observations to supervisors;
- Monitors cleaning of stairwells, elevators, restrooms, hallways, and meeting rooms;
- Assists customers in accessing services;
- Cleans and maintains the sidewalks and steps adjacent to assigned buildings;
- Maintains flexibility to work all city buildings as needed as well as occasionally working outside normal hours;
- Train new employees in general cleaning tasks and standards;
- Organizes and sets up space configurations (tables, chairs, etc.) for various meetings and group assemblies within facilities and for specific off-site events;
- Reports inventory needs for cleaning supplies, materials, and equipment;
- Retrieves supplies, equipment, furniture, etc. and deliver to specified destination;
- Assembles and disassembles simple office equipment and furniture from written instructions;
- Organizes and participates in the relocation of offices;
- Receives and responds to work requests using a variety of communication methods (e-mail, telephone, written, etc.);
- Performs a wide variety of tasks during inclement weather, including but not limited to leadership of small crews in the sidewalk snow removal function;
- Transports necessary equipment; supplies; special event materials;
City mail and correspondence to Council Member's homes; - Assists with flag display to assigned buildings;
- Hangs pictures when needed;
Qualifications

Education and/or experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and considerable experience in light maintenance and custodial work and experience operating a computer with knowledge of Microsoft Office Software, Lotus Notes, and the Internet; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the facility.
Mathematical skills
Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Reasoning ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Interpersonal skills
Ability to communicate in a tactful and cooperative manner. Ability to be involved with citizens or other City employees. May provide leadership and guidance as a work leader.
Additional RequirementsValid Virginia driver's license and acceptable driving record according to City criteria; driving record check will be completed prior to employment.
