Job Summary

Join the University Housing Facilities team as a Facilities Technician I! University Housing is looking for handy individuals with excellent customer service skills to join our 3rd shift facilities team. Facilities Technician I staff keep University Housing spaces safe and clean for residents, staff, and guests. They also assist in repairing small equipment and help to troubleshoot maintenance issues. This is a great position for a night owl that wants to fine tune or learn new facilities related skills.

Facilities Technician I is a critical component of our 24/7 operation to ensure ongoing safety, maintenance, and operational continuity in our housing and dining spaces. This position responds to urgent maintenance concerns, provides emergency response to residents and summer guests and completes custodial cleaning duties. Maintenance duties include responding to fire alarms, conducting freezer and cooler checks, assisting in and coordinating emergency elevator maintenance, helping students and guests who are locked out, and responding to work orders that require immediate attention.

Work Schedule will be determined with the selected finalist upon hire. Primary schedule for 3rd shift positions is 8:30pm – 7:00am, consisting of four 10-hour shifts on a rotational basis. All 10-hour shifts include holidays and weekends on a rotating basis as a part of their normal schedule. There is flexibility, and schedule alterations may be available as operations and position expectations demand.

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Assists with inventory and distribution of deliveries to appropriate entities under close supervision
  • Maintains and cleans residence halls, dining facilities, and immediate surrounding grounds and walkways.
  • Utilizes basic equipment to repair and maintain basic machinery, equipment, and facility property under close supervision to prevent further damage and ensure optimal operation
  • Responds to and resolves urgent or emergency elevator, mechanical, temperature, and safety issues in housing and dining spaces.
  • Escalates and documents issues according to established policies and procedures
  • Assists with routine facility inspections and monitors cleanliness
Department

Division of University Housing, University Housing Facilities. University Housing Facilities is a part of the Division of University Housing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and focuses on housekeeping, mechanical maintenance, and long-term infrastructure projects and planning. As a student service organization, University Housing Facilities provides quality living/learning environments to over 8,000 undergraduate student residents during the academic year and 18,000 guests in the summer months.

Additionally, Housing Facilities serves the University Apartments community, which is home to approximately 3,000 residents in 1,240 apartments on 83 acres. The University Apartments Community also includes a large Community Center and a Housing operated licensed early childhood education program. University Residence Halls consists of 30 buildings containing approximately 2 million square feet and 37 acres of surrounding grounds. In addition to residential living spaces the residence hall infrastructure supports many functions and programs requiring many types of spaces such as classrooms, office space, dining and culinary space including commercial kitchens and marketplace areas, mechanical support spaces and large meeting rooms.

Compensation

The starting hourly wage is $19.00 or higher based on qualifications and includes a competitive retirement and benefits package, including vacation, holidays, and paid time off. This is a full-time position. University Staff can also earn additional money when working at night (6:00pm to 6:00am) and on weekends (Saturday and Sunday).
