Job Summary
Custodians keep campus running by maintaining clean, safe, and welcoming spaces. They support teaching, learning, research, and events across UW‑Madison’s Division of Facilities Planning & Management. This position covers 2nd and 3rd shifts, performing custodial tasks such as cleaning and sanitizing classrooms, offices, restrooms, and common areas; emptying trash and recycling; moving furniture and equipment; and reporting maintenance or safety concerns.
Key Job Responsibilities- Monitors and secures facility interior and exterior entrances and reports issues to appropriate entities
- Maintains clean and clear walkways to ensure they are free of debris, litter, snow, and ice
- Utilizes basic equipment and supplies to clean assigned facility areas and remove waste and recyclables
- Documents and reports repairs, violations, and pest control needs
- Maintains organization of supply areas and equipment, documents inventory, and requests additional supplies as needed
Full‑time (100% FTE) with Ongoing/Renewable status. Work is performed onsite. Shift options include:
- 2nd shift:
Monday‑Friday, 5:00 pm – 1:30 am or Monday‑Friday, 6:00 pm – 2:30 am - 3rd shift:
Sunday‑Thursday, 10:30 pm – 7:00 am
Occasional weekends and holidays may be required. This role requires moderately heavy physical effort including standing, walking, bending, lifting, and moving furniture, equipment, and supplies. Occasional overtime may be required for snow removal or emergency cleanup.
Required Qualifications- Ability to shovel snow and ice outside in winter conditions
- Availability to work overtime and weekend hours when needed
- 3 months of previous cleaning, custodial, hospitality, or related experience
High School Diploma or GED preferred.
CompensationBase rate: $17.00 per hour. Additional pay: $2.50 per hour for night hours worked (6:00 pm–6:00 am); $0.80 per hour for weekend hours worked; one‑and‑a‑half times base rate for hours worked on designated legal holidays.
Current UW‑Madison employees may be hired up to their current rate of compensation, based on qualifications.
