Provide service and maintenance for the Proton Beam Therapy (PBT) System used for treating cancer at The University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics, Madison, and the associated support systems as assigned. Responsibilities include preventative and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, and compliance with technical and mechanical programs such as worker safety, spare parts program, tool management, equipment tagging, and facility procedures.
Responsibilities- Monitor and provide support to positively affect operational performance and patient experience.
- Respond to service support calls within a timely manner during working hours.
- Interface with customers to ensure maximum customer satisfaction.
- Work in compliance with all regulatory standards including HIPAA, EH&S, FDA, OSHA, Radiation Safety, and Hitachi internal policies.
- Collaborate with team members to schedule preventive maintenance to minimize part costs and maximize efficiency.
- Maintain a strong understanding of PBT system specific vocabulary for effective communication and problem resolution.
- Perform all PBT system preventive maintenance tasks (Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Semi-Annual, Annual) and create corresponding documents (PM, CM, work orders, IAFs) in a detailed and orderly fashion.
- Utilize a Laser Tracker for data acquisition.
- Schedule and replace vacuum components (rough pumps, TMPs, vacuum gauges) and use vacuum leak detector to maintain proper sealing and vacuum levels.
- Perform X‑ray tube replacement, align 2mm sphere to isocenter, tube/FPD calibration, crosshair alignment confirmation, and radiation isocenter measurement.
- Guide and mentor maintenance technician I personnel.
- Inspect and test incoming/outgoing materials and participate in shipment preparations.
- Create and incorporate newly written procedures under the guidance of senior technician, engineering, and management.
- Troubleshoot and solve complex PBT system issues under senior technician, engineering, and management direction.
- Maintain 6S practices (Safety, Sort, Store, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) under management direction.
- Maintain inventory control of all necessary supplies and chemicals with adherence to chemical safety and storage regulations.
- Safely work in areas with high voltage and utilize proper LOTO (lock‑out, tag‑out) safety practices.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering documents (schematics, wiring diagrams, etc.).
- Ability to utilize measurement instruments (oscilloscopes, multimeters, leak detectors, etc.).
- Safely lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly and work in elevated areas with safety harness.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Experience working in mechanical, electrical, high voltage, and radiation environments.
- Comfortable with a compressed work week as part of a cross‑functional team.
- Flexibility to cover rotating shifts and availability to work overtime as needed.
- High School Graduate or GED (Required).
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Robotics, Electrical, Electronic Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Medical Physics/Accelerator, Nuclear or Radiation Physics (Preferred).
- Graduate of Trade School or 3 years of experience with Electrical/Robotics/Mechanical/Electronic work (Preferred).
