Summary

This position is located within the Environmental Management Services Division of a VA Medical Center. This position is under the direct supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor or designee. This position performs both janitorial and custodial services at the VA Medical Center located in William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital - Madison WI.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. The qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen‑out element, usually question 1 in the online questionnaire. Those who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: dexterity and safety, follow directions, handle weights and loads, reliability and dependability, special aptitude - housekeeping work practices.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training that translates directly to paid employment. All qualifying experience, including volunteer experience, is credited. Note that a full year of work is considered 35‑40 hours per week.

Part‑time experience is credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of the duties and the number of hours per week spent in each position.

Duties
  • The housekeeping aides maintain VA facilities for Veterans and their families, ensuring a clean and safe patient care environment.
  • Housekeeping aides work alongside other Veterans and perform a full range of light and heavy cleaning duties and routine housekeeping duties.
  • Essential tasks include addressing spills quickly, discarding trash, installing light bulbs, vacuuming, polishing floors, cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, and disinfecting patient rooms with suitable chemicals that do not compromise patient health.
  • Collect and dispose of soiled linen using proper methods to handle potential contamination.
  • Maintain a stock of cleaning materials and equipment.
  • Operate powered equipment such as scrubbing machines, buffers, carpet‑cleaning machines, and industrial vacuums, ensuring equipment, cords, and hoses are kept clean and stored properly.
  • Perform routine maintenance on cleaning equipment, such as changing filters and brushes on vacuum cleaners and floor buffers.
  • Propel, lift, carry, and move cleaning equipment, standing and walking for several hours as required.
  • Empty trash cans at various locations multiple times a day.
  • Work schedule:

    2nd shift Mon‑Fri 2:30 pm‑11 pm; 3rd shift Sun‑Thu 10:30 pm‑7 am.

  • Physical requirements include continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The job may involve occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment weighing over 50 pounds and requires great dexterity, coordination, concentration, and visual acuity.
