Custodians at University Housing work together in teams to help keep spaces welcoming, safe, and clean for residents, staff, and guests. As a Custodian in University Housing you will:
- Communicate with residents and guests to address needs and service requests
- Complete work in occupied or vacant residence hall and dining spaces
- Demonstrate and role model exceptional customer service
- Promote and participate in a collaborative team environment
- Maintain and implement prescribed cleaning standards
- Provide support and assist as needed in the implementation of plans and procedures in the event of an emergency

- 1st shift position(s):
Typical schedule is 7:30am - 4:00pm, Monday through Friday, 8‑hour shifts, total 40 hours per week. Some positions include scheduled shifts every other weekend. Some flexibility may be possible for scheduled days, work hours, and shift lengths. - 2nd shift position(s):
Typical schedule is 3:00pm – 1:30am, 4 days per week, 10‑hour shifts, total 40 hours per week, including rotating holidays and shifts every other weekend. Some flexibility may be possible for scheduled days and work hours.
Work schedule will be set with selected finalist(s) at time of offer. Schedule alterations as operations and position expectations demand.
Compensation and Benefits$17.51 per hour with a competitive retirement and benefits package, including vacation, holidays, and paid time off. Benefits information can be found at This is a full‑time position.
University Staff also earn additional money when working at night (6:00pm‑6:00am) and on weekends (Saturday and Sunday). Additional $2.50 per hour for nighttime work on weekdays, up to $2.50 per hour for daytime weekend work, and up to $3.30 per hour for nighttime weekend work.
Current UW‑Madison employees may be eligible to be hired up to their current rate of compensation, based on qualifications.
Key Job Responsibilities- Maintain organization of supply areas and equipment, document inventory, and request additional supplies as needed
- Document and report repairs, violations, and pest control needs
- Utilize basic equipment and supplies to clean assigned facility areas and remove waste and recyclables
- Assist residents and guests with event set‑up and take‑down
- Monitor and secure facility interior and exterior entrances and report issues to appropriate entities
- Prepare, service, and/or maintain residence hall and dining facilities for residents and guests
- Maintain clean and clear walkways to ensure they are free of debris, litter, snow, and ice
- 3 months of previous cleaning, custodial, hospitality, or related experience
- 6 months of previous continuous employment
- English proficiency with the ability to speak, read, write, and understand verbal instructions
- A valid driver's license that meets UW Risk Management standards
