Title:

Custodian

Qualifications:
  • High school education or equivalent
  • Ability to use and maintain equipment and machines
  • Knowledge of safe use and handling of cleaning chemicals
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Effective communication and cooperative work skills with students, parents, community members, and school personnel
  • Ability to use technology (e.g., email, timesheet software)
Reports to:

Head Custodian or Lead Custodian

Job Goal:
  • Maintain the overall cleanliness, sanitation, and general upkeep of the school or facility, including minor repairs and maintenance
  • Promote positive community relations among students, staff, parents, and community members
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Clean assigned areas of the facility, including classrooms, hallways, restrooms, and common areas
  • Perform general maintenance tasks related to the upkeep and operation of the facility
  • Ensure the security of the facility during regular shift, including locking and securing doors
  • Report maintenance concerns to the Head Custodian (or Lead Custodian at smaller schools) for additional support from the Building Maintenance Department
  • Participate in snow removal, including shovelling, snow blowing/plowing, and applying sand/salt to walkways
  • Perform total cleaning and general maintenance during the summer months; may be assigned to district‑wide project crews as needed
  • Follow all district policies and procedures
  • Work in conditions requiring extended exposure to cold or warm temperatures as necessary
  • Assist, under the direction of the Head or Lead Custodian, with the setup of special events
  • Perform other related tasks and responsibilities as assigned

  • Frequent sitting, standing, stair climbing, and ladder climbing
  • Constant lifting of 5–20 pounds; frequent lifting of 20–50 pounds; occasional lifting of up to 75 pounds

  • Occasional crawling, sitting, or stooping
  • Other physical tasks as required
Terms of Employment:

Hourly, work year as determined by the RSU 57 School Board

Evaluation:

Performance will be evaluated according to School Board policy on evaluation.
