Public Facilities - Mechanical Maintenance Technician

PUBLIC FACILITIES

Annual Salary Range: $62,843.81 - $72,853.20 (FY26)

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Mechanical Maintenance Technician works under the supervision of the Assistant Director and is overseen by the Public Facilities Director. This position is responsible for maintaining and repairing the building's mechanical systems, including HVAC and plumbing systems. Performs preventive maintenance, troubleshoots issues, and makes necessary repairs to ensure the buildings are safe and have efficient operation. Ensures grounds are properly maintained.

Ideal candidate is self‑motivated, possesses strong handyman abilities, takes pride in keeping all facilities in excellent condition, and has good interpersonal skills.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS and DUTIES:

  • Perform and ensure routine manual labor associated with building maintenance, and maintenance of grounds.
  • Assist lead technicians with the heating, air conditioning, and plumbing services.
  • Regularly clean, inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain mechanical systems, including HVAC equipment, and plumbing systems.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks like changing filters, and lubricating parts.
  • Prepare surfaces, apply paint and other finishes, and ensure quality workmanship on a variety of structures and equipment.
  • Organise and maintain company trucks to ensure they are stocked and ready daily.
  • Respond to emergency maintenance requests.
  • Create and update work orders using building maintenance software.
  • Must be available during snowstorms for snow removal.
  • Maintain a clean and organized shop and office area.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Director or Assistant Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • General knowledge of trades related to building maintenance and repair.
  • Familiarity with a variety of building maintenance procedures and techniques.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to recognise hazards and follow safety practices.
  • Experience in using hand and light power tools.
  • Must be self‑motivated with the ability to work independently, requiring little supervision. Attention to detail is crucial.
  • Obligated to respond to emergencies on a 24‑hour basis, as circumstances dictate, which may require working nights and weekends to include inclement weather.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with all staff; and interactions with the public must always be courteous and professional.
  • Dependability essential, must have excellent punctuality and attendance.

Education/Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of building maintenance experience or equivalent combination of training and work experience required.
  • A valid Massachusetts Driver's License.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and ENVIRONMENT:

  • Duties performed require climbing ladders, scaffolding, and extended aerial platforms.
  • Physical strength and dexterity to lift, move and handle equipment; ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs.
  • Moderate to heavy work is performed in all types of weather that include extreme hot or cold conditions.

SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM. (37.5 hours per week)
