Under the direction of the Custodial Services Supervisor, the Department of Facilities Services (DFS), and in collaboration with your colleagues, perform physical labor for a wide variety of custodial and maintenance duties, providing a clean, orderly, and safe environment. Collaborate with DFS and other University departments to initiate and deliver high-quality custodial services in a timely manner.

Duties
  • Complete various tasks required to maintain assigned buildings and areas in a clean and orderly condition according to instructions and/or documented best practices. This work includes performing heavy cleaning duties, such as cleaning floors, polishing fixtures, shampooing rugs, cleaning, servicing, and supplying restrooms, cleaning stoves and gas barbecue grills, cleaning laundry rooms, emptying all interior trash containers, and removing litter and rubbish from building front and rear entrances.
  • Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks.
  • Shampoo carpets and clean floors by sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, and/or scrubbing, following manufacturer specifications and safety procedures.
  • Gather and remove trash from trash receptacles and building areas and deposit in trash dumpsters.
  • Take inventory, request, and manage supplies. Keep the janitor closet in an orderly manner.
  • Identify and monitor potential insect or rodent activity. Spray or set trapping devices following Pepperdine standards.
  • Identify and address issues in need of attention, such as unsafe conditions or repairs, and generate work orders accordingly.
  • Clean and restore building interiors damaged by fire, smoke, or water, using commercial cleaning equipment, de‑humidifiers, etc.
  • Respond and deploy equipment as necessary to control and mitigate potential property damage and unsafe conditions.
  • Follow appropriate procedures and instructions for the use of chemicals and equipment in order to prevent damage or injury.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and a clean work area.
  • Clean walls and windows, glass partitions, and mirrors, using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, and squeegees.
  • Assist the department in meeting goals and participate in staff improvement programs, including training.
  • Ensure effective communication and coordination among all internal and external project participants and stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications Required
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Five years of custodial work experience.
  • Successful completion of a pre‑employment physical exam.
  • Training on Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Basic knowledge of tools/equipment related to the position, such as a dry/wet vacuum, mop bucket and wringer, and a chemical dispensing unit.
  • General knowledge of safety equipment such as ground‑fault circuit interrupters (GFCI’s).
  • Knowledge of operating scrubbers, buffers, waxers, and carpet extractors.
  • Ability to follow verbal and basic written instructions in English.
  • Ability to provide written and verbal instructions in English.
  • Ability to read chemical labels.
  • Ability to operate and maintain related tools and equipment in a safe operating condition.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to lift objects weighing 50 Pounds, and to carry objects weighing 30 pounds for 100 feet.
  • Willingness to observe strict safety standards, including the safe use of equipment and materials.
  • Must have a valid California driver's license and be insurable by the University’s insurance carrier.
  • Must be flexible to accept assignments at various campus locations.
  • Willingness to work extended shifts, especially during special events or emergencies.
