Housekeeper (Nights)
The primary purpose of this position is to maintain clean, safe, and orderly campus facilities by performing routine cleaning of classrooms, offices, common areas, and restrooms. The role supports a healthy campus environment through high‑quality custodial work, timely completion of tasks, and adherence to safety and operational standards. As essential personnel, the employee also assists during emergencies, including snow removal and extended‑hour operations.
The housekeeper, under supervision, performs general custodial services as directed on campus.
Responsibilities:
- Cleans common areas, classrooms, hallways, and stairwells;
- Moves and spot-cleans furniture;
- Shampoos carpets and strips, waxes, and buffs floors;
- Cleans offices and classrooms, including desks, dusting window ledges and glass, furniture, doors, vacuuming, whiteboards, and emptying trash;
- Cleans and restocks bathrooms, removes trash (daily), and reports all safety matters to the appropriate supervisor;
- Communicates to the Lead Housekeeper the need for additional cleaning supplies to maintain appropriate levels in the respective housekeeping closets;
- Establishes and maintains a positive, effective working relationship with members of the department and the campus community;
- Performs effectively in a service environment;
- Follows all State, University, and departmental policies, procedures, and practices;
- Performs other related duties as assigned;
- May be required to work additional hours in the event of an emergency. This may require reporting to work early, staying late, and/or working weekends; and
- Designated as "Essential Personnel." All essential personnel employees are required to report for snow removal or other emergencies when assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- Related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired;
- General knowledge of cleaning terms and safety procedures related to hazardous cleaning chemicals;
- Ability to read, understand, and abide by all safety policies and procedures;
- Ability to read and follow cleaning instructions and schedules;
- Ability to practice effective oral communication skills with students, faculty, and staff;
- Ability to work independently, without close supervision;
- Ability to remain calm during stress periods; and
- Valid driver's license: must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator's license that meets all of GMU's requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason's Vehicle Use Policy 1411.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in the use of mechanical cleaning equipment.
