Position Summary

Manteno School District is seeking applications for the position of District Grounds and Maintenance Assistant. This position is responsible for maintaining District buildings, grounds, facilities, and equipment in a safe, clean, attractive, and fully operational condition. The successful candidate will operate and maintain groundskeeping and maintenance equipment, assist with facility upkeep and repairs, and support the overall functionality and appearance of District properties.

Qualifications/Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Valid Illinois driver's license required
  • Must successfully complete and pass a lift test
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in grounds, maintenance, equipment operation and maintenance, or a related field is required
  • Knowledge of equipment, tools, parts, and machinery used in grounds and facility maintenance
  • Illinois Pesticide License required or willingness to obtain and maintain certification
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and frequently lift and/or move more than 100 pounds
  • Ability to perform heavy physical labor, including lifting, climbing ladders, and working in confined spaces
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and ice
  • Ability to travel between District facilities as needed
  • Flexibility in work schedule to accommodate facility and grounds maintenance needs
Responsibilities
  • Operate groundskeeping equipment including mowers, tractors, twin-axle vehicles, snow blowers, chain saws, sod cutters, and pruning equipment.
  • Performs tasks to maintain buildings and grounds in safe and operable condition, such as making minor repairs to property as requested
  • Mow, edge, aerate, weed, mulch, dethatch, trim, and maintain lawns and landscaped areas.
  • Prune trees, shrubs, and hedges using appropriate hand and power tools.
  • Apply fertilizers, herbicides, and insecticides in accordance with licensing requirements and safety regulations.
  • Maintain fields and facilities through ongoing upkeep, repair, and seasonal maintenance to ensure safe, functional, and high-quality conditions.
  • Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and other District properties.
  • Operate snow removal equipment and apply salt or other de-icing materials as needed
  • Assist with plowing District properties during winter weather events
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to District buildings and facilities
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and perform seasonal servicing and winterization of groundskeeping and maintenance equipment
  • Provide custodial coverage during staff absences as needed
  • Assist with facility operations during inclement weather and emergency situations
  • Follow all applicable safety rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Safely operate hand tools, power tools, electrical equipment, and groundskeeping machinery
  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality regarding student, family, and staff information
  • Work collaboratively with co-workers and school staff
  • Support students' social, emotional, and behavioral growth
  • Uphold District policies, procedures, and educational standards
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor
