Note: As per the collective agreement, probationary employees will receive 5% less than the regular permanent rate of the classification they are employed in, until the completion of four (4) months continuous service or eighty (80) actual days worked, whichever is the greater. They will then commence receiving the regular permanent rate.

Performs general roads maintenance activities on regional roads, bridges, and roadsides, including winter snow plowing and ice control duties and general summer roads maintenance activities (e.g., grass cutting).
Duties/Responsibilities- When properly trained and certified, operates equipment and performs duties for various work activities noted below. Receives guidance and in-field training/support from supervisors, lead hands, and other Section staff as it relates to developing skills and abilities to competently perform a range of work activities and use equipment.
- Cuts grass and other vegetation along regional roadsides and properties, using agricultural tractor, mowers, trimmers, and ancillary equipment.
- Operates dump trucks, loaders, and utility vehicles to haul materials to/from work sites and for disposal (e.g., gravel, asphalt, topsoil, gabion stone).
- Performs general maintenance/cleaning of infrastructure (e.g., catch basins, bridge decks). Removes graffiti from regional property.
- Performs restoration work on infrastructure and property. Installs culverts, including construction of gabion walls and stream liners, restoration of trenches, excavation, and landscaping.
- Performs general roads maintenance (e.g., patching, dead animal/debris removal, guide rail/cable maintenance, sound barriers, retaining walls, drainage, road patrol, brush chipping, tree felling/removal, chainsaw work). Uses other equipment/small tools as required.
- Operates trucks and ancillary equipment for snow plowing, salting, and sanding operations, including wheel loader. Uses hand tools to remove snow/ice from roadsides and drainage areas. Performs other winter roads maintenance activities (e.g., snow fences, patching). Uses oxygen-acetylene torches to cut metal components (e.g., bolts) when changing plow blades.
- Performs road building activities, including cross-sections, excavations, installing road beds, side slopes, ditches, line, and grade. Performs surveys for roadway construction, as required.
- Performs traffic control duties and sets up traffic control plans.
- Maintains vehicles, equipment, and hand tools in good, safe working condition per policies and standards. Performs minor repairs/replacements as needed. Reports damage and safety issues to lead hand/supervisor immediately. Discusses equipment repair with fleet management staff. Performs daily maintenance circle checks and completes inspection checklists.
