Job DescriptionTo inspire and prepare each and every scholar with confidence, courage, and competence to achieve their dreams; contribute to community; and engage in a lifetime of learning by performing tasks and duties associated with the maintenance and care of district facilities, equipment, and grounds.
Responsibilities and Tasks- Assuming full responsibility daily of the position.
- Completing work allocation directives issued by the Building Engineer and the building principal to the custodial personnel.
- Performing general housekeeping tasks (dust mopping, wet mopping classrooms, restrooms and hallway floors, cleaning restrooms, stripping and sealing resilient and hard surface floors, washing windows, walls and lockers, vacuuming all carpeted areas) according to established district systems and cleaning standards.
- Performing minor carpentry, electrical, mechanical and non‑potable water system plumbing repairs.
- Providing support to kitchen staff by mopping floors, unloading groceries and stacks in storeroom, and stocking supplies.
- Monitoring and adjusting building automation controls.
- Securing the facility; arming and disarming the security system.
- Reporting vandalism or unauthorized individuals in buildings.
- Maintaining building grounds (watering, mowing, trimming, pruning shrubs and trees, weeding, removing paper and debris from school yard and along fence lines).
- Performing snow removal and keeping sidewalks free of ice.
- Taking charge of all aspects of the physical operation of the building for which the custodian is responsible.
- Reporting to the Assistant Coordinator, Maintenance Services or their designee any breakdown of equipment that does not function as designed.
- Maintaining and submitting all appropriate reports and logs in a timely manner.
- Painting district facilities.
- Maintaining building equipment per department guidelines.
- Operating and maintaining the boiler; checking boiler to ensure appropriate operation.
- Setting up and taking down equipment (tables, chairs, band shell, etc.).
- Responding to questions and providing excellent customer service to facility users.
- Performing other comparable duties of a similar nature as assigned.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Must obtain MN Specialist boiler license to receive Class 2 pay plus the Shift Differential.
- Computer skills, including proper use of email communication.
- Knowledge of building automation systems.
- Knowledge of hand, power, diagnostic tools, and equipment required for the job.
- Knowledge of all safety precautions applicable to trade.
- Knowledge of HVAC operation, repair, and proactive/reactive maintenance.
- General knowledge of mechanics, electrical, steam, air system, carpentry, masonry, and plumbing.
- Knowledge of cleaning techniques and materials.
- Ability to care for and repair facilities and equipment.
- Ability to work with principal and building staff to correct issues as they arise.
- Ability to respond effectively to student, staff, and community needs.
- Problem‑solving skills.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to maintain accurate and current records.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to follow instructions, exchange information, and assist others.
- Providing excellent customer service.
- MN Special boiler license preferred.
- Training or experience cleaning and maintaining a commercial facility desired.
