Responsibilities
- Lead and participate in water utility operations, including establishing service for new customers, setting new meters, making taps, inspecting meters for leaks, high readings, damage, or illegal connections, installing and repairing water services, raising manhole lids, locating and repairing water/sewer lines, excavating ground around water/sewer lines, flushing sewer lines and manholes, operating sewer pump stations, and inspecting pump stations to ensure proper operations.
- Supervise, direct, and evaluate assigned staff: process employee concerns and problems, direct work, counsel, discipline, and complete employee performance appraisals.
- Coordinate work activities for assigned staff and/or contracted vendors: prioritize and assign work, ensure subordinates have proper resources, monitor status of work in progress, inspect completed work, consult with staff for complex issues, and provide progress and activity reports to supervisor.
- Manage pre‑billing and post‑billing processes: review daily meter reading reports and approve billing files.
- Monitor contracted work: communicate with contractors installing new water lines and meters, coordinate bid proposals for contracted services, and maintain related documentation.
- Maintain inventory of equipment, parts and supplies: order materials and equipment, coordinate repairs and maintenance, recommend specifications for procurement, monitor use of supplies and inventory levels, and maintain documentation.
- Receive and respond to escalated and/or complex inquiries, concerns and complaints from customers: investigate and resolve complaints, determine validity and corrective action.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by five years of experience in reading, repairing, and maintaining water meters.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.
- Must obtain Confined Space Entry certification within six months of assignment.
Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling objects and materials of moderate weight (12‑20 pounds).
Sensory RequirementsSome tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental FactorsPerformance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, extreme temperatures, extreme noises, hazardous materials, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, falling objects, electric currents, traffic hazards, animal/wildlife attacks, animal bites, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances or explosive environments.
