We provide expert meter reading services—leak detection, atmospheric corrosion, line location, software solutions, and water, gas, and electric meter reading—to utilities and related organizations throughout the United States.

About the Role

The Meter Reader reports to the Meter Services Supervisor and is responsible for reading and inspecting gas, electric, and/or water meters. Success in this role requires high endurance in outdoor conditions, top‑notch time management, and day‑to‑day flexibility.

What You’ll Do
  • Read meters daily and/or as needed, usually at a customer’s premises for service billing.
  • Complete assigned duties within the required time frame for cycle readings.
  • Assign sequence numbers to new services and rearrange meter reading routes as necessary.
  • Inspect meters and report damage or apparent malfunctions to the supervisor.
  • Evaluate unsafe conditions or clean out meter boxes.
  • Use electric, gas, and water meter reading devices.
  • Operate hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, flashlights, keys, gas detectors, generators, pumps, shovels, and other equipment.
  • Follow printed materials—service orders, maps, manuals, and computer printouts.
  • Assist in training new meter readers.
  • Walk and stand extensively, including long distances (up to 20 miles per day) in various weather conditions.
  • Engage in customer communication, responding to complaints and providing information about meter services.
About You Must Haves
  • Some high school education and age 18 or older.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • No prior experience required; training will be provided.
Nice to Haves
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least one year of experience in meter reading or outdoor work.
Skills
  • Ability to multi‑task and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Exceptional flexibility with daily routines and route scheduling.
  • Strong time‑management skills to complete meter reads efficiently.
  • Excellent communication and customer‑service skills.
  • Proficiency in handling unhappy customers professionally.
  • High attention to detail for problem solving.
  • Capability to walk long distances and prepare for varied weather conditions.

  • Comfortable with outdoor conditions and long walks.
  • Flexible, adaptable to changing schedules.
  • Strong planning and time‑management abilities.
Drug/Alcohol Testing

Drug/alcohol testing is required. Testing is mandated per non‑regulatory requirements for employees working with water, electric, and meters, as well as per federal DOT regulations for employees handling gas meters.
