Position Title: Facility Services / Custodian
Department: Operations and Maintenance Immediate Supervisor: Custodial Supervisor
Summary: Maintain the district’s school buildings in a clean, sanitary and safe condition, ensuring no disruptions to the educational program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Clean and maintain designated spaces, including restrooms, classrooms, offices, multipurpose rooms, corridors, stairs, windows, sinks, drinking fountains, carpets, trash cans, wastebaskets, gymnasiums, cafeterias, and other areas as directed; mop, wash, buff, and vacuum floors.
- Maintain grounds and perform seasonal work such as sidewalk care, snow removal, lawn care, landscaping, parking lots, driveways, fencing and trash pickup.
- Restock disposable items, maintain inventory records, and request additional supplies according to procedures.
- Assist visitors, provide directions, and set up needed equipment in a courteous manner.
- Make minor adjustments and repairs using hand tools, small power tools, gardening tools, pipe, wire, lumber, building materials, cleaning supplies, ladders, and scaffolds; perform preventive maintenance such as replacing bulbs, clearing drains, and adjusting thermostats.
- Promote energy conservation by turning off lights, closing doors, regulating thermostats, and checking for leaks and crannies.
- Communicate with principals, supervisors, and students about safety and proper maintenance; report damage and maintenance needs.
- Secure buildings by locking gates and doors, checking windows, and ensuring fire hazards are minimized.
- Follow safety techniques, wear protective equipment, and practice proper lifting and climbing procedures.
- Demonstrate reliable attendance and complete all assigned duties.
Quality of work, quantity of work, job knowledge, problem solving, interpersonal skills, dependability, professional appearance, organisation, safety, communication, adaptability, professional approach, and flexibility are expected.
Minimum Education or Experience- High‑school graduate or GED required.
- Previous custodial experience preferred.
Skills and Abilities
- Prioritise and organise tasks.

- Identify hazardous building conditions or chemicals and use, store, and dispose of chemicals safely.
- Maintain facilities and custodial equipment.
- Identify and resolve problems.
- Communicate verbally and in writing.
- Perform basic mathematics.
- Read and interpret rules, reports, and procedure manuals.
- Lift, carry, push, pull, and move items up to 60 lb as required.
- Possess a valid Iowa driver’s license.
- Walk/stand constantly; perform low‑level work and climb ladders frequently; maintain balance on wet or icy surfaces; bend and stoop frequently; reach overhead occasionally; lift up to 60 lb; push or pull equipment up to 100 lb; carry items up to 50 lb and move up to 10 feet.
The role involves indoor work and occasional outdoor work, involving moving mechanical equipment, handling chemicals, moderate noise levels, and tight deadlines. The district maintains a drug, alcohol, and tobacco free policy.
