Position Title: Facility Services / Custodian
Department: Operations and Maintenance
Immediate Supervisor: Custodial Supervisor
Summary: Keeps the District's school buildings in a state of housekeeping excellence that prevents problems or interruptions to the educational program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Clean and preserve designated spaces, equipment, etc., in assigned buildings (e.g., clean and sanitize restrooms, classrooms, offices, multipurpose rooms, corridors, stairs, windows, sinks, drinking fountains, carpets, garbage cans, wastebaskets, gym, cafeteria and other areas as directed); clean, mop, wash, buff and vacuum floors.
- Maintain grounds and perform seasonal ground work (sidewalk care, snow removal, lawn care, shrubs & landscaping, parking lots, driveways, fencing, trash pick‑up).
- Restock disposable items and maintain accurate inventory usage and data (room supplies, restrooms, etc.); store supplies neatly; request additional supplies as needed.
- Assist visitors with directions and required equipment setup; cooperate with staff.
- Perform minor adjustments and repairs (hand tools, small power tools, gardening tools, pipe, wire, lumber, building materials, cleaning supplies, ladders, scaffolds); perform preventive maintenance (bulbs, drains, toilets, thermostats).
- Promote energy conservation (turn off lights, close doors, regulate thermostats, check for leaks, caulking windows).
- Communicate with principal/supervisor or other site personnel or students regarding activities, safety, or maintenance; report damage or needed repairs.
- Ensure security of building and grounds (lock/unlock gates, check windows, lights, fire hazards).
- Apply proper safety techniques: PPE, material handling, lifting, equipment use, climbing apparatus.
- Demonstrate reliable attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education or Experience- High school graduate or GED.
- Previous custodial experience preferred.
- Prioritize, organize, and accomplish assigned work.
- Work independently or as a team to complete tasks.
- Identify building conditions and hazardous chemicals.
- Use, post, and dispose of chemicals safely.
- Understand custodial procedures and equipment maintenance.
- Recognize problems and take appropriate action.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic mathematical skills for weight, volume, and distance.
- Read, write, and interpret rules, reports, and procedures.
- Physical ability to lift up to 60 lbs, push up to 100 lbs, and perform routine manual tasks.
- Possess a valid Iowa driver’s license.
- Walk or stand continually; perform low‑level work within 4 inches of the floor frequently.
- Climb ladders and step stools; manipulate stairs.
- Maintain balance on wet, icy, or snow‑covered surfaces.
- Bend, stoop, and twist as needed.
- Overhead reach up to 74 inches occasionally.
- Lift up to 60 lbs from a height of 36–49 inches occasionally.
- Carry up to 50 lbs up to 20 feet occasionally.
- Push or pull with forces up to 100 lbs occasionally.
Work occurs mainly indoors in school buildings and occasionally outdoors. The employee may work near moving mechanical equipment and handle toxic or caustic chemicals. Noise is moderate. The district maintains drug, alcohol and tobacco free zones.
