Title of Position: Custodian Substitute

School Year:

Compensation: $18.50 per hour

Job Goal: To maintain the physical school plant and grounds in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of them may be made at all times.

Reports To: Head Custodian in Charge for day‑to‑day work situations, Supervisor of Custodians for overall custodial functions, and Building Principal.

• Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial or janitorial work and safety precautions.
• Knowledge of proper use of custodial supplies (synthetic detergents, soaps, scouring powders, waxes, etc.) and techniques for various floors, walls, toilets, furniture, and equipment.
• Knowledge of use, operation and care of custodial equipment (vacuum cleaners, floor machines, floor brushes, sweeping mops, lawn mower, line trimmer, etc.).
• Knowledge of care of buildings and property (grounds, walks, lawns, shrubbery, etc.).
• Skill in use of hand tools, minor adjustment and repair of furniture, changing light bulbs, and working electrical systems for lighting areas.
• Knowledge of fire and accident prevention in public buildings and operation of hand extinguishers.
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions in English; bilingual preferred (Spanish or Portuguese).
• Ability to maintain harmonious working relationships.
• Physical fitness for manual tasks, ability to lift over 40 pounds, climb step ladders.
• Appearance neat; honesty, dependability, respect, integrity.
• Attention to detail and physical/mental capabilities to perform tasks.
• Alternatives to these qualifications may be considered by the Superintendent of Schools.

• Participate in sweeping, dusting, scrubbing, mopping, waxing, polishing, and minor repairs for floors, walls, windows, light fixtures, toilets, washbowls, furniture, and other furnishings.
• Clean, service and supply restrooms.
• Maintain school grounds: mowing, edging, sweeping walks, removing snow and ice.
• Collect and empty trash.
• Eliminate fire hazards and prevent accidents.
• Address safety/security concerns and report as necessary.
• Perform other duties assigned by the Principal, Head Custodian, or Custodial Supervisor.
