Job Summary

The Missouri Department of Agriculture, Grain Inspection and Warehousing Division offers a flexible schedule, part‑time Grain Inspection Worker position in Marshall, MO. Employees in this position serve a critical front‑line role in the foundation of Missouri's grain market, inspecting carriers prior to loading of grain, obtaining grain samples, and performing basic technician functions to aid in establishing the value of that grain.

The work is primarily in the field at grain loading sites, with some in‑office duties. Reliable transportation to the office is required, though a state vehicle will be provided for transportation to work sites.

Compensation
  • Base rate of $17.55/hr. + 1.5x overtime pay
  • +$4.00/hr. for hours worked outside of normal business hours
  • +$5.00/hr. for qualifying work on shuttle trains
  • Paid twice per month
  • Paid on‑the‑job training
Schedule
  • Multiple positions open immediately
  • Flexible scheduling options available; supervisors work with employees based on their availability
  • Many shifts are typically between 6 a.m.

    - 6 p.m., Monday - Friday, with extended hours and weekends common during peak season (fall harvest)
Responsibilities
  • Receive on‑the‑job training in the FGIS grain sampling and technician procedures
  • Inspect railcars, containers, barges, trucks, and other carriers to ensure they are in proper condition for loading and free from leaks, odors, and infestation
  • Obtain representative samples of grain
  • Observe and verify the weighing of carriers by grain company employees
  • Complete work records legibly, accurately, and efficiently
  • Maintain vehicles, sampling and lab equipment, and work environments properly
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, grain businesses, others in the grain trade and the general public
  • Perform other related work as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • Possess a valid Missouri Driver's License
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED/equivalent; work experience may substitute for education deficiencies
  • At least 18 years old
Physical Considerations
  • Regularly work in a grain elevator environment that may include loud noise, foul air, grain dust, inclement weather, extreme heights, and moving machinery
  • Occasionally work in enclosed spaces (shipping containers) for short periods to inspect the carrier for damage
  • Occasionally work in outdoor or semi‑outdoor environments for extended periods
  • Distinguish subtle differences in color and odor
  • Occasionally work from heights, including the ability to climb stairs and ladders
  • Frequently lift a minimum of 15 pounds, occasionally lift 50 pounds to a height of five feet with reasonable accommodations
  • Sit or stand for extended periods (several hours)
Special Requirements
  • Adapt to variable work schedules that include nights, weekends and holidays, and that are subject to change with little notice
  • Have consistent and reliable means of communication (mobile phone)
  • Have consistent and reliable means of transportation, including occasionally in inclement weather
  • Ability to obtain USDA/FGIS licenses to sample and process grain within established time frames
  • Employees may be ineligible for hire if they, their spouse, minor children, or immediate household relatives are employed by or otherwise receive direct or indirect financial consideration from any grain elevator or warehouse, or engage in the merchandising, storage, commercial transportation, or other commercial handling of grain. If applicable, this relationship must be disclosed prior to hire.

Job Details

This position cannot exceed 1,000 hours annually. THIS IS A PART‑TIME NON‑BENEFITTED POSITION.
