The Superior Court of Contra Costa County is conducting an open recruitment to fill Custodian vacancies. Positions will be filled at both the entry/trainee Custodian I level and at the fully qualified, journey level Custodian II. Custodians perform a wide variety of functions in various cities in the county, including Martinez, Richmond, Walnut Creek, and Pittsburg. An eligibility list will be established as a result of this recruitment and may be used to fill other vacancies in the future.
Persons appointed to Custodian positions will receive lead direction from Lead Custodians and will report to the Custodial Supervisor. Custodians will be expected to perform duties to keep Court maintained buildings clean and sanitary, and they will perform other related work as required.
Individuals selected must be available to be assigned to any court location and work various shifts.
Individuals appointed to these positions must be able to work well with others, as well as work independently, and must possess good interpersonal and oral communication skills. Custodians may be assigned to work days, evenings and nights, as well as occasional weekends. Qualifying night shifts will be paid a 5% shift differential. The Court reserves the right to alter the hours assigned to shifts and anyone accepting employment with the Court as a Custodian must be available to be assigned to any shift and/or work location within Contra Costa County.
This job requires extensive travel between court facilities on a daily basis.
Regular and punctual attendance is essential.
Persons appointed as Custodian I may promote to Custodian II after one year of employment with satisfactory performance.
Duties that may be assigned include, but are not limited to the following:- Cleans, vacuums, sweeps, mops, scrubs, strips, waxes and polishes floors;
- Vacuums and cleans carpeting;
- Cleans, dusts and polishes office furniture and building fixtures;
- Cleans, disinfects and polishes drinking fountains and restrooms;
- Operates electric scrubbers, buffers and vacuum cleaners and may make minor repairs to equipment;
- Measures and dilutes cleaning solutions;
- Moves office furniture, recycle materials and supplies;
- Empties waste baskets, recycle bags and trash containers;
- Operates vehicles to move office furniture and to deliver or pick up equipment supplies or recycle materials, or to travel between various building locations;
- Makes simple written and oral reports, such as identification of building maintenance needs or deficiencies and preparation of timecards;
- Washes windows and walls up to a single story height;
- Changes light bulbs or tubes;
- Works on ladders or scaffolding;
- Reports all building work items found deficient that are not in custodial work scope to the Facilities Department to be done by others;
- As a Custodian II, provides training to new custodians.
- Perform routine building cleaning and maintenance duties in accordance with service work schedule;
- Follow oral instructions and directions;
- Read, understand and follow written instructions, equipment manuals and directions on proper measurement and usage of cleaning compound;
- Write and make basic reports to Supervisor;
- Work cooperatively with co‑workers, supervisors, customers and members of the public;
- Operate cleaning equipment in a safe manner;
- Lift, move and carry supplies and equipment and recycle materials which can weigh in excess of 75 pounds using appropriate lifting techniques;
- Drive vehicles to transport office furniture, to deliver or pick up equipment, supplies or recycle materials or to travel between various building locations.
Possession of a high school diploma, a GED equivalency certificate or a high school proficiency certificate.
Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of California or the ability to provide suitable transportation approved by the Court.
