Overview

Are you seeking an opportunity to apply your painting skills for a premier research and development institution? If so, we’re looking for someone like you to join our team. The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Painter to work as a member of a multi-craft construction team, supporting other trades for interior and exterior renewal projects.

Painters prepare and paint a variety of interior and exterior architectural surfaces, machinery and equipment. They prepare and apply various types of single and multi-component coatings.

• Survey existing coating conditions and recommend methods and techniques to restore to the desired condition.
• Prepare work site and surfaces for painting, consistent with the materials to be used and in conformance with accepted industry standards and specifications.
• Select, mix and apply various interior and exterior coatings.
• Clean up after each job completion, maintain a safe and orderly work area and perform minor painting equipment maintenance as needed.
• You will operate APL vehicles and industrial equipment to perform these duties.
• Work a regular schedule of 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, with flexibility for extended hours or occasional weekend work during peak periods or customer-driven outages.

You meet our minimum qualifications if you have:

• Five (5) or more years painting experience in a commercial/industrial environment
• Working knowledge of the various interior and exterior coating systems (latex and epoxy) used in a commercial/industrial facility
• Working knowledge of OSHA and EPA requirements related to personal safety and environmental protection
• Ability to set-up and operate tools and equipment associated with the painting trade
• Effective communications skills, both verbal and written
• Capable user of Personal Computers
• Have a valid driver’s license and can pass a Motor Vehicle Record check
• Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You’ll go above and beyond if you have:

• Are a member in the Society of Protective Coatings (SSPC) or National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE)
• Possess OSHA or EPA training or certification

• Maintain a regular schedule from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, with flexibility for extended hours or occasional weekend work during peak periods or customer-focused outages
• May require operating APL vehicles and industrial equipment
• Use of personal protective equipment and working outdoors in inclement weather may be required
• Must be able to work from ladders, scaffolding, roofs, and in confined spaces
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
• May be required to assist other trades
