Nature of WorkThe Assistant Building Service Manager I is primarily responsible for directing a staff of Building Service personnel during the evening hours to provide a safe, clean, and healthy learning environment for students. This role ensures consistent, proactive customer service and that custodial cleaning is performed safely by all employees. The manager provides support to the Building Service Manager I in leadership, training, record‑keeping, accountability of crew members, custodial supplies management, planning and supporting school activities, and securing the school for daily operation.

- Utilize knowledge of methods, materials, and practices for operational support of school activities.
- Understand proper use, care, maintenance, and storage of custodial equipment.
- Apply knowledge of St. Mary’s County Public School System policies, programs, and procedures.
- Inform Building Service Manager I of all absentees during the evening shift.
- Adjust cleaning plans around special events and programs.
- Assist in coordinating and assigning daily duties of evening building service crew members.
- Direct staff execution of the site team cleaning plan.
- Communicate supply, material, and equipment needs to the Building Service Manager I.
- Conduct hands‑on training with building service crew members.
- Secure school facilities and comply with all safety and security guidelines, operating the building alarm system.
- Remain on call for after‑hours alarm situations.
- Prepare work orders, supply inventories, and other tasks as assigned.
- Move and set up furniture to support all school functions.
- Support after‑hour activities by school and community groups.
- Inspect the building to ensure security at the end of the shift.
- Report maintenance or facility problems to the Building Service Manager I.
- Perform a full range of custodial tasks while directing crew members on the evening shift.
- Instruct crew members in proper and safe use of custodial supplies and equipment with personal protective equipment.
- Perform other related and unrelated job duties as assigned.
Required:
- High school diploma or GED.
- One (1) year of experience in caring for and cleaning school or office facilities, with increasing responsibility.
- Reliable transportation to and from work.
- Flexibility to respond to building alarm calls at all hours.
- Physical abilities:
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a frequent and repetitive basis.
- Stand and walk on tile and/or concrete flooring for extended periods.
- Carry and use backpack and hip‑mounted vacuum cleaners weighing up to 20 pounds for extended periods.
- Climb ladders up to 15 feet.
Full‑time, twelve‑month position.
Salary Grade RangeBased on EASMC-ESP salary schedule for twelve‑month eight‑hour employees – Range 6.
