Location: Coltons Point
Job Summary
Assistant on St. Mary's County passenger vessel; performs other duties as assigned.
Essential FunctionsCommunicate with guests and answer questions in a professional and friendly manner;
Assist with regular boat upkeep and maintenance;
Prepare/clean boat before every operation day;
Responsible for the location and safe keeping of all documents pertaining to the operation of the tour vessel;
Reports to the boat Captain problems, concerns, and maintenance requests;
Handles lines, assists with loading, unloading, and docking;
Take over as captain in event of emergencies (on-going training will be provided)
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesAbility to gain thorough knowledge of St. Mary's County Government policies and procedures;
Ability to effectively communicate with other staff and especially members of the public;
Basic knowledge of boat operations;
Ability to apply departmental policies and procedures to work tasks;
Ability to work independently on tasks and maintain accurate records;
Knowledge of local history and natural history of the lower Potomac River;
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Education and ExperienceHigh school diploma or G.E.D;
One year or more of related experience;
Or equivalent technical training, education, and/or experience.
Additional Requirements:
Must successfully pass background investigation with favorable results;
Must pass a pre-employment drug test and random routine tests thereafter;
CPR Certification;
Physical and
Environmental Conditions:
Work requires constant physical effort including some lifting or handling of heavy tools or materials of 50 pounds or more. The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions,e.g., extreme outdoor weather conditions, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.
Under the Affordable Care Act/ACA, hourly employees who average at least 30 hours of service per week over a 12 week measurement period are eligible for health insurance benefits. St. Mary's County Government provides sick and safe leave in the amount of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked for seasonal, and temporary employees who are scheduled to work 12 hours or more per week are eligible for leave.
