Job Overview

Custodian (2nd shift) – Grantsville Elementary School, GCPS. This is a contractual, 12-month position, 20 hours per week, typically 4 hours per day on the 2nd shift, with responsibilities for custodial duties, minor maintenance, and ensuring the facility is attractive, sanitary, and safe for students, staff, and other stakeholders.

Position: Custodian (2nd shift)

Status: Contractual

Terms: 12 months, 20 hours per week, 2nd shift (generally 4 hours per day but may be greater depending on system needs)

Salary: $15.75 - $17.25 per hour, commensurate with education and experience

Supervisor: Principal, Assistant Principal, Head Custodian, and/or Director of Facilities, Maintenance, and Operations

Availability: Immediately

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform custodial duties, including minor maintenance and other miscellaneous duties, to ensure that all assigned areas and the main facility are attractive, sanitary, and safe.
  • Participate in general cleaning and maintenance according to a predetermined schedule (sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, disinfect, wash windows, etc.).
  • Arrange furnishings and equipment for classroom activities, meetings, and events.
  • Perform work at heights up to 12 feet using ladders and/or scaffolding for cleaning, changing light bulbs, and related tasks.
  • Prepare facility for daily operations (opening doors, setting/disarming security systems, raising/lowering flags).
  • Respond to safety and operational concerns (facility damage, alarms, inclement weather).
  • Identify and report unusual facility conditions or malfunctions in HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems.
  • Take safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Attend and participate in job-related professional development.
  • Contribute to the short-term and long-term success of students, staff, and the system.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and positive demeanor; maintain a courteous and professional presence at all times.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to read and perform basic math
  • Ability to understand multi-step written and oral instructions
  • Ability to problem-solve, work independently and as part of a team, and function without distractions
  • Strong stakeholder service skills (students, staff, administration, parents, general public, etc.)
  • History of professionalism and strong work ethic
  • Self-motivation with the ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
  • Ability to learn and implement proper cleaning techniques and regimens
  • Ability to learn and implement minor maintenance tasks
  • Ability to operate or learn to operate and service cleaning and maintenance equipment
  • Physical ability to stand, sit, walk, climb stairs and ladders, balance, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, bend, push, and pull
  • Ability to lift and transport heavy to moderately heavy objects (average 50-75 lbs.)
  • Significant dexterity of hands and fingers
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model for students, staff, and other stakeholders
  • Regular and predictable attendance

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience cleaning schools, offices, and/or municipal facilities
  • Knowledge of operation and minor repair of heating, cooling, electrical, and plumbing equipment
Duties and Responsibilities

The custodian will:

  • Participate in general cleaning and maintenance of the school building according to a predetermined cleaning schedule.
    • Sweep, mop, wet-wash, and vacuum floors in assigned areas.
    • Dust furniture and clean/polish fixtures.
    • Keep wastebaskets, chalkboards, and dry erase boards clean.
    • Scrub and disinfect toilets; clean all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains.

    • Maintain all assigned areas.
  • Arrange furnishings and equipment for classroom activities, meetings, and events.
