The Custodian performs custodial and housekeeping duties for the Jess Odom Community Center, maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for patrons and Parks & Recreation staff.
Requirements
REPORTING STRUCTURE
The Custodian reports directly to the Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation, and indirectly to the Director of Parks & Recreation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Clean and maintain various areas within the Jess Odom Community Center to include but not limited to office areas, restrooms, meeting rooms, and public spaces.
- Sweep and mop floors, vacuum carpeted areas; dust baseboards; clean windows; clean and sanitize tables and chairs and perform other light custodial and related duties
- Buff, strip and wax hard surface, as required.
- Maintain appropriate cleanliness of public and meeting spaces before, during and after events in compliance with applicable guidelines, policies, and procedures.
- Complete all assigned duties from applicable checklists as required.
- Clean and maintain all windows, doors and blinds.
- Empty and clean waste receptacles, recycle bins and trashcans; replaces plastic liners.
- Maintain an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment; notifies supervisor of supplies needed.
- Interact in a positive and responsive manner with clients, attendees of events, seminar speakers, and the general public.
- Complete other duties and tasks as needed or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
The knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to fulfill the essential duties are usually, although not always, acquired through the following:
- O ne (1) year of custodial experience in office buildings, meeting facilities, etc., or related area.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
- Must be available to work evenings, holidays, and weekends as required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Prior custodial experience.
CERTIFICATES & LICENSES
- No certificates or licenses are required for this position.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Knowledge of the materials, methods, and practices used in performing custodial practices and cleaning products and supplies.
- Knowledge of custodial methods, principles and practices.
- Skill in the operation of hand tools utilized for cleaning e.g. broom, mop, etc.
- Skill in the operation of vacuum cleaner and buffing machine.
- Skill in the use of custodial materials and chemicals and in the operation of basic custodial equipment.
- Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
- Ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building services.
- Ability to work with chemicals, cleaning agents or similar solutions using only normal protective equipment to maintain facilities.
- Ability to lift and move tables and chairs.
- Ability to operate motorized custodial equipment such as sweepers, scrubbers, vacuums and extractors.
- Ability to perform manual labor.
- Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work effectively with other employees.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is generally performed indoors in a temperature-controlled environment, with occasional work outdoors and exposure to varying weather conditions. The employee may be exposed to cleaning chemicals, solutions, fumes, odors, dust, and other substances commonly associated with cleaning and maintenance activities. Appropriate safety procedures and personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required depending on the task. The noise level is generally moderate but may periodically increase due to the use of cleaning equipment, machinery, or other workplace activities.
The position may require standing, walking, bending, reaching, and other physical activities associated with the assigned duties.
