The Student Nurse Extern program (SNEP) provides nursing students with the opportunity to work side‑by‑side with a Registered Nurse on a dedicated in‑patient medical surgical unit. This hands‑on learning experience allows externs to strengthen clinical knowledge, develop skills, and become immersed in the specialty and daily nursing workflow of the unit. Externs gain meaningful exposure to the professional nursing role while supporting a positive patient experience under the direct supervision of an RN preceptor.
ProgramHighlights
- Work 2 twelve‑hour shifts per week on a medical surgical unit
- Collaborate directly with an RN preceptor
- Experience real‑world clinical practice in a supportive learning environment
- Opportunity to pick up additional shifts as a Patient Care Technician (PCT) on your home unit or other units
- After completion of the summer program, students may continue employment as a PCT, with a minimum of 3 shifts per semester until graduation
- Provide basic clinical nursing care delegated to unlicensed assistive personnel
- Assist patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
- Assist with delegated clinical data collection (e.g., vital signs, intake/output)
- Support delegated nursing task completion
- Communicate effectively using closed‑loop communication
- Contribute to unit‑based nursing‑sensitive indicators and patient experience initiatives
- Participate in learning experiences across various care environments to broaden knowledge of nursing roles
- Enrollment in an accredited nursing program and completion of Junior Year BSN or completion of first year of a 2 year AND nursing Program.
- Completion of foundational nursing coursework (typically through at least the first clinical rotation)
- Completion of 40 or more hours of clinical experience as evidenced by transcripts and/or a clinical faculty letter attesting to the above
- BLS/CPR through the American Heart Association
- Strong communication, teamwork, and patient‑care skills
- Commitment to learning and professional development
Work situations vary from routine to complex, emphasizing delivery of safe, compassionate, and evidence‑based patient care. Externs will collaborate closely with RN mentors, interdisciplinary team members, patients, and families.
CompensationSalary: $21.85 per hour
