Position Overview

This position is responsible for leading and managing the athletic program for the sport. The coach will work closely with students, faculty, administrators, and parents to implement a comprehensive and competitive program. Under the supervision of the Athletic Director, the coach assumes overall responsibility for the program, fostering a positive and disciplined team culture. The ideal candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, enthusiasm, and the ability to work collaboratively within the school community.

A successful track record in teaching and coaching is expected.

Qualifications Required
  • Valid Illinois State Teaching Certificate (Type 03, 09, or 10) OR ASEP/NFHS Certification, as mandated by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA).
  • Compliance with Illinois state law and IHSA regulations regarding CPR and AED certification for all high school athletic coaches.
  • Completion of IHSA-mandated concussion awareness training and other safety protocols as required by state and federal regulations, including the Youth Sports Concussion Safety Act (105 ILCS 5/22‑80).
  • Background check and fingerprinting clearance in accordance with the Illinois School Code and IHSA eligibility requirements.
  • Completion of federal Title IX training to ensure compliance with anti‑discrimination laws in athletics.
  • In‑depth knowledge of the sport, including rules, techniques, and strategies.
  • Prior successful coaching experience in the assigned sport.
  • Strong instructional skills in both individual and team fundamentals, strategy, and physical conditioning.
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and equitable athletic program that supports the academic and personal development of all student‑athletes.
  • Coaching Certification:
    For non‑teaching staff, possession of a current coaching certification through the American Sport Education Program (ASEP), National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), or other IHSA‑approved programs is required.
  • Concussion Certification:
    Completion of state‑mandated concussion certification is necessary, with certifications typically valid for two years.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee and manage all aspects of the program.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership, supervisory, and organizational skills in program implementation.
  • Foster a cooperative, enthusiastic, and inclusive environment for students, faculty, fellow coaches, and parents.
  • Exhibit excellent public relations skills and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders.
  • Inspire and motivate student‑athletes and coaching staff by setting an example of dedication and professionalism.
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement training programs based on current best practices in the sport.
  • Instruct athletes and assistant coaches in fundamental skills, team strategies, and safety protocols.
  • Establish and enforce standards of conduct and sportsmanship among student‑athletes.
  • Ensure adherence to school, district, IHSA, Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), and federal regulations regarding high school athletics.
  • Maintain compliance with Title IX requirements ensuring equal opportunities for all student‑athletes.
  • Collaborate with the Athletic Director to develop a competitive annual game schedule.
  • Maintain and oversee the proper use and care of school‑owned athletic equipment.
  • Adhere to all IHSA rules regarding student eligibility, transfers, and recruiting restrictions.
  • Report any violations or incidents that may impact student‑athlete safety or eligibility to the Athletic Director and IHSA officials as required.
  • Ensure that student‑athletes maintain academic eligibility and support their educational success through mentoring and coordination with faculty and staff.
  • Collaborate with the Athletic Director to establish budgetary requirements for the upcoming season, recommend equipment guidelines, and operate within budget appropriations.
