SummaryThe primary purpose of the Teacher Assistant is to support the classroom teacher in delivering instruction and managing the learning environment. This includes helping with lesson preparation, supervising students, reinforcing learning concepts, providing individual or small group support, and assisting with classroom organization and behavior management.
Qualifications- Education:
Associate's Degree or 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university - Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with others, self-discipline, and initiative
- Valid Paraprofessional and/or Substitute Teaching certificate from the Illinois State Board of Education
- Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills introduced by the teacher.
- Assist with lesson preparation by copying and distributing materials, equipment, and handouts.
- Support students who need additional assistance, including those with learning difficulties or language barriers.
- Reinforce learning concepts introduced by the teacher.
- Discuss assigned teaching areas with classroom teachers to coordinate instructional efforts.
- Communicate with the teacher about student performance and needs.
- Assist with recording of daily attendance.
- Assist students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to reinforce learning concepts.
- Assist the teacher with supervising students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, media center, and field trips.
- Assist the teacher in maintaining bulletin boards and other classroom learning displays.
- May be required to supervise students at recess, lunch, and bus arrivals and departures; escort or remain with classes in Art, Music, and Physical Education as requested.
- Serve as a source of information and help for any substitute teacher in the teacher's absence.
- Participate in in-service training programs and professional development.
- Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding student information.
- Work with one student on a one-on-one basis in activities initiated by the student's I.E.P.
- Assist students with physical needs including toileting and mobility for students with disabilities.
- Encourage positive behavior and social interactions.
- Operate equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
- Offer emotional and social support to students.
- Subject to stress caused by a changing environment, tight deadlines, and heavy workload.
- Frequent use of electronic mail.
- Accidents improbable outside of minor injuries such as cuts, scrapes, or bruises.
- No exposure to chemical or health hazards.
- Primarily indoor work in environmentally controlled conditions.
- Normal effort or occasional periods of light physical activity.
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board policy on evaluation of support staff.
