Overview
Tapers are responsible for applying drywall tape compound to seams between drywall panels and to nail or screw indentations, installing and finishing metal, plastic, and aluminum trims, and applying coat sequences to meet specified finish levels. The role emphasizes maintaining production quality and exceeding customer expectations while working on new installations and repairs to existing walls and ceilings.
Responsibilities- Finish walls, ceilings, and trim using hand and mechanical tools to meet required finishing standards.
- Apply drywall tape compound to seams and indentations, and apply the appropriate number of coats per the specified finish level.
- Inspect and sand coated areas after each coat, using dry, wet, or vacuum sanding methods.
- Read and interpret construction drawings and work plans.
- Verify panels and joints are tight, aligned, and secured without damaging the paper surface or core.
- Establish work schedules and flow of tasks.
- Organize and verify materials and supplies.
- Clean and repair tools as needed.
- Mix joint compounds and apply fill and finish coats.
- Finish inside and outside corners with appropriate coatings.
- Skim coat over gypsum board, concrete, or related materials.
- Spray finish compound where required.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the five drywall finishing levels and methods.
- Maintain production and quality standards, reporting to a foreman or lead man and completing assigned tasks on time.
- Operate safely and maintain a safe work environment, adhering to precise limits and finish standards.
- Climb and maintain balance on scaffolds and ladders.
- Reach for, handle, and manipulate objects and materials.
- Lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and maintain adequate vision (natural or corrected).
Wages based on union scales: $19.93 per hour for entry‑level apprentices to $53.05 per hour for journeymen, with variations based on job site location.
