Overview
Description The School Building Engineer is responsible for ensuring a safe, clean, healthy, and well-maintained learning and working environment for scholars, staff, and the school community. This essential position oversees building operations, preventative maintenance, repairs, custodial services, and facility-related projects, while ensuring the efficient operation of mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), and building systems. The role collaborates closely with school leadership, operations teams, and external vendors and provides support across the GCS network as needed.
Responsibilities- Perform inspections, preventative maintenance, and general repairs of building systems, equipment, and grounds.
- Ensure facilities are safe, functional, clean, and prepared daily for students and staff.
- Oversee and direct custodial staff and services.
- Monitor and maintain HVAC, electrical, plumbing, security, lighting, and ventilation systems.
- Respond to emergency situations and support school operations during critical or inclement conditions.
- Utilize the maintenance ticketing system and maintain accurate logs of work performed.
- Coordinate and manage special projects, capital improvements, deferred maintenance, and grant-funded work.
- Identify work beyond scope and recommend qualified contractors with specifications.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable fire, safety, health, environmental, and building regulations.
- Maintain tools, equipment, parts, and supplies necessary for facility operations.
- Communicate effectively with administrators, staff, students, parents, and external partners.
- Maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical and professional standards.
- Perform additional duties as assigned and permitted by law.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of three (3) years of verifiable maintenance and repair experience in educational, medical, or office settings or certification/licensure in Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, or a related field (preferred).
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated integrity, initiative, and professionalism.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English.
- Authorization to work in the United States (Form I-9 compliance required).
- Ability to lift, carry, stand, walk, reach, and operate tools and equipment.
- Visual, auditory, and communication abilities sufficient to perform job duties.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions, cleaning chemicals, and a school environment that may be moderately noisy.
