Description
The Maintenance Director is responsible for the care, maintenance, safety, and operational readiness of all church and school facilities within Holy Rosary Parish. This position supports the mission of the Diocese of Memphis by ensuring that parish and school properties provide a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for worship, education, and ministry.
General SummaryThe Maintenance Director works under the authority of the pastor and in collaboration with the school principal to ensure compliance with diocesan policies, civil regulations, and Safe Environment standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Facilities Maintenance- Maintain all parish and school buildings, including the church, classrooms, offices, parish hall, restrooms, storage areas, and auxiliary facilities.
- Perform routine repairs and coordinate major repairs related to HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, carpentry, painting, and general structural needs.
- Develop and implement a preventative maintenance schedule.
- Maintain records of inspections, repairs, warranties, and service contracts.
- Oversee landscaping, lawn care, irrigation systems, playground areas, sidewalks, and parking lots.
- Ensure safe conditions during inclement weather, including ice mitigation and storm preparation.
- Monitor exterior lighting and campus security-related infrastructure.
- Ensure facilities meet all applicable diocesan policies, fire codes, OSHA standards, and state/local regulations.
- Maintain fire alarm systems, extinguishers, emergency lighting, and safety signage.
- Assist in implementing diocesan risk management procedures.
- Report safety hazards promptly to the pastor and principal.
- Assist the pastor and principal in the supervision of custodial staff.
- Establish and maintain cleaning standards for church and school facilities.
- Manage inventory and ordering of custodial and maintenance supplies.
- Prepare facilities for weekend Masses, Holy Days, sacramental celebrations, funerals and major liturgical events.
- Assist with setup and breakdown for parish and school functions.
- Obtain bids in accordance with financial policies of the Parish and the Diocese.
- Supervise contractors performing maintenance or capital improvements.
- Communicate major repair needs to the pastor for approval prior to work being performed.
- Assist Pastor in developing and managing the annual maintenance budget.
- Practice responsible stewardship of parish and school resources.
- Identify long-term capital improvement needs.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Trade certification or technical training preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years of facilities maintenance experience, preferably in a church, school, or institutional environment.
- Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and general building maintenance.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to lift, climb ladders, and perform physical labor as required.
- The Maintenance Director must agree to abide by the Code of Conduct for Employees and Volunteers (found m.org/diocesan-law).
- Employee must demonstrate professionalism, discretion, and respect in interactions with clergy, faculty, staff, students, and parishioners.
- Employee must maintain confidentiality in all parish and school matters.
- Must successfully complete a criminal background check.
- Must complete VIRTUS Safe Environment training prior to beginning employment (or within the timeframe required by the Diocese).
- Must comply with all diocesan Child Protection policies and mandatory reporting laws.
- Position includes both indoor and outdoor work.
- Evening and weekend hours may be required to support parish liturgies and school events.
- Employee must be available for emergency maintenance situations as needed.
- Employment is subject to the personnel policies of the Diocese of Memphis.
- Performance will be evaluated annually by the pastor, with input from the school principal as appropriate.
- Employment is at-will in accordance with Tennessee law.
