Position: Mechanic Assistant - Part-Time - Custodial

Employment Type:

Part-time (25 hours per week)

Base Hourly: $21.01

Class/Calendar: B22, 12 months

New Hire

Experience:

1% of the base hourly rate granted for each year of verified like experience (within ten years) beyond the requirement, up to a ten-year maximum

New Hire

Education:

1% of the base hourly rate awarded for an AA or higher degree if not required for the position

Job Summary:

To overhaul and repair all custodial equipment; to operate testing equipment and power tools to repair and service custodial equipment.

Prior to employment or during the first 3 months of new hire probationary period, drug and alcohol testing shall be required of all new contract employees who work in Custodial. Any applicants having a confirmed positive test shall not be eligible for employment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Overhaul and repair all custodial equipment; use gas and arc welding as needed
  • Operate testing equipment and power tools to repair and service custodial equipment
  • Perform field service and repair at district sites when needed
  • Train, instruct and oversee part-time assistant
  • Keep shop clean
  • Train and instruct employees on operation and care of custodial equipment
  • Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
  • Assists with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid, or ability to obtain, Arizona driver's license
  • Minimum two years' mechanical experience repairing electrical equipment
  • Experience repairing custodial equipment (i.e. backpack vacuums, upright vacuums, sidewalk blowers, auto scrubbers, buffers, etc.); minor experience with gas and arc welding

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High School education or equivalent
  • Supervisory experience helpful

  • Knowledge of tools, materials, methods and safe working practices related to custodial equipment repair helpful
  • Ability to operate and understand testing equipment used to identify equipment for repair
  • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot all mechanical equipment problems
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor and lifting

Work Environment &

Physical Requirements:

  • Primarily based in a maintenance garage or transportation yard.
  • Exposure to noise, fumes, dust, and chemicals (e.g., fuels, lubricants, and cleaning agents)
  • Required to follow safety protocols and wear protective gear like gloves, goggles, steel-toe boots, and coveralls
  • Work areas may be hot in summer and cold in winter, especially when working outside or in poorly ventilated garages
  • Lifting and Carrying:
    Must frequently lift and carry objects weighing 50 lbs. or more (such as tools, tires, and equipment parts)
