Custodian – After-School Program About Big Ideas Educational Services

Position:
Custodian – After-School Program

The Custodian is an essential member of our site team and helps ensure that students participate in programming in a clean, safe, organized, and welcoming environment.

This position is ideal for someone who is dependable, takes pride in their work, works well as part of a team, and understands the importance of maintaining a school environment where children are present.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain assigned program areas, classrooms, restrooms, cafeterias, common areas, and other designated spaces in a clean and professional condition.
  • Perform routine cleaning and sanitation duties according to the daily site schedule.
  • Use cleaning supplies, materials, and equipment safely and appropriately.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to spills, cleaning needs, and other site-related requests.
  • Help maintain clean and orderly spaces throughout program hours.
  • Follow all safety, sanitation, and facility procedures established by Big Ideas and the school site.
  • Follow daily assignments and schedules provided by the Site Manager or designated supervisor.
  • Communicate promptly with site leadership regarding facility concerns, safety hazards, supply needs, or maintenance issues.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, activity leaders, security personnel, and site leadership to support a positive after‑school environment.
  • Demonstrate patience, professionalism, and appropriate conduct when working in areas occupied by students.
  • Follow Big Ideas policies, procedures, staff handbook expectations, and established chain of command.
  • Participate in required staff meetings, trainings, and site meetings as scheduled.
  • Assist with program setup, breakdown, and special events when needed.
  • Complete other reasonable site-support duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Ability to successfully complete all required Level 2 background screening and clearance requirements for working with children.
  • Previous custodial, janitorial, school, childcare, hospitality, or facility‑maintenance experience preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and complete assigned responsibilities with limited supervision.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities during program operations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work respectfully and patiently around elementary‑aged students.
  • Reliable attendance and consistent punctuality.
